@MamaMagpie: heal up soon!!

I had it as well and it is ok for baby to get a bit of blood.

Breast milk on it and really letting it air dry after nursing is best. Sunshine can even help.

@banana: it's no fun! Using lanolin religiously so hopefully it'll do some good.
@Kemma: I never would've thought of putting breast mill on my nipples, that's a great tip! Going to try after H is done eating in a few minutes. And it's so nice to know you had some struggles but now are doing great :)
@illumina: we can get through it!!
@Foodnerd81: I've been putting lanolin on them after every feeding, but never thought to let them air dry -- definitely going to try that. And I'll definitely look into those gel pads, too. How encouraging that your girl can re-latch herself at just 7 weeks! Good job!
@Pepper: thank you! I've never heard of APNO, is it like a lanolin?

You're doing great! The blood won't hurt him, don't worry (even though it freaks you out, I'm sure!). My nipples were cracked and bleeding in the beginning. As others have mentioned, keep applying nipple cream. When you meet with the LC, see if she can get you a script for APNO (all purpose nipple ointment). It's medicated and wonderful, it'll heal you right up! (And it's obviously safe for breastfeeding.

Now that your milk is in, it'll be SO much easier. These first few weeks are rough, but it will get better. Hugs!

Second the lanolin- apply after every session. And let the nips air dry- there was SO much topless time in my house in the beginning. It made me very grateful for not having a lot of visitors. There are these gel soothing pads you can get, lansinoh brand, that help a lot but you have to wipe off your breast with water before feeding every time so I would wait a little until he is eating slightly less often- I used them around day ten when the boobs were at their worst. You can reuse for 72 hours.

Blood won't hurt baby even though its super gross.

You'll have read this a million times but it gets so much better. Everyone said 6 weeks is a turning point and it was for me, and at 7 weeks she can relatch herself when she pulls off and my nipples really aren't sore (though they also don't feel "normal" either). Good luck and I agree it will help that your milk came in, though you may have some small issues latching when you are really engorged in the early days.

@MamaMagpie: @illumina: It does get better ladies, my girl and I had more than our fair share of problems and we're still going strong at eleven months! Hang in there :-)

Having your milk in will definitely help, more milk = less friction on the nipple! You can try spreading breastmilk on your nipples and then air drying them, sunshine can also help them heal and it's important to keep them reasonably dry. Lanolin is good for healing and doesn't need to be washed off before feeding, it also doesn't have any taste so shouldn't upset your LO.

At the end of the day, the blood isn't going to hurt your wee babe and your LC should definitely help improve your latch.

I'm new to the breast feeding arena and my nipples are killing me. One is even bleeding -- H pulled away after not latching correctly and I freaked when I saw blood on his face.

His latch is admittedly not the best -- we are working on it -- but he is getting what he needs (enough wet diapers and no weight loss since discharge from hospital). We are meeting with an LC next week and hopefully she'll help, but does anyone have experience and/or advice on how to soothe the bloody nip? Is it ok that he is inevitably ingesting blood?

My milk just came in last night so I'm also hoping this helps with his latch...
