For privacy- day and night- and letting light in. I would go with a solar shade and use curtains and Roman shades to dress them up. We had a an Eco-shade for our double sliders in our old house and it was by far my favorite window treatment.

We have blinds now and they are functional for absolute privacy, but you sacrifice privacy for natural light depending on how open you want your blinds. Same thing I found when we had Plantation shutters. The biggest benefit of the Eco-Shade is that you can have them completely down and you still get great light. You get to pick the amount of natural light you want pouring in.

Not saying you should buy from here, but The Shade Store has lots of examples of all the products.

@looch: The house we just bought has Pella windows with blind inserts. I love them! It's meant that I don't have to rush into getting window treatments. I'm scared of what it will cost to repair them if we have issues, though!

We have cordless cellular shades in all bedrooms and have been really happy with them. We have Levelor (spelling) brand in all but the guest room, definitely worth the splurge for the more expensive ones. They hold up really nicely and are super easy durable.

We have cordless Roman shades in all the bedrooms, blackout lined. Over top, I have a combination of valances or drapes because alone they don't look so great. Old house, small window problems.

If I could have my dream windows, they'd have the blinds sandwiched between two panes of glass.

We had light filtering cellular shades in our condo and I liked them a lot. Dust really was never an issue. We plan to get blackout, cordless, cellular shades for all the bedrooms in our new house because we like them so much. The ones in our condo were about ten years old and in good shape, though the cords got wonky sometimes (not an issue with cordless ones and safer for kids). You can also get top down ones so you can adjust the privacy and light.

My husband and I are trying to decide what to put in our windows at the house we just bought. He hates most blinds, and wants either plantation shutters or cellular shades. I like Roman shades, but I don't have a lot of experience with shades. I want something that lets in a lot of light during the day but also blocks out light at night. I like that with shades, I can easily lift them up, so the whole window is exposed at daytime. However, I'm concerned about their durability and how to keep them clean, since you can't just wipe them like a wood blind.

Do you have blinds or shades in your house? Which do you prefer, and why?
