My LO had a blocked tear duct for a really long time (well past 1 year.). It opened sometime after 15 months. We tried massaging it on a half-regular basis - no idea if that helped. Our ped said that there are a lot of different opinions on when to get surgery and we decided to reevaluate at 1.5 years. It seems gone now though so luckily no surgery for us.

@Mrs. Oatmeal: LO had his surgery yesterday, all went really well. I'll write a post about it in about a week when we can see if it's worked :-)

I was just going to call our pedi about this for DD.....she's one week and her eyes are both full of watery gunk and one was closed shut when we got up this morning. I've been doing the warm compress and cleaning it out, but does this sounds like a clogged duct?

@Mrs. Oatmeal: just to update you, we had our appt and LO is booked in for surgery next week. I'm nervous about it but have been told it's quite simple. A 15 minute procedure in which they stick a probe down the tear duct to open it. He goes under sedation so won't feel anything or know what is happening. He should be in and out of hospital in a hour and a half. I'll let you know how we go :-)
And the name of the ointment drops we used for his eye were called Clorsig.

My daughter had them until well past 1 year. They were pretty solidly cleared up by age 2 though, which was when the doctor was going to start getting concerned from what I remember.

Maybe it's genetic b/c I had blocked tear ducts as a baby too. Mine were surgically opened at some point. My mom still talks about how horrible it was for her -- hearing her little baby scream. I was very little, so I have no recollection of the experience.

I am wondering if this is what is causing my DD's left eye to being watery constantly and has eye booger in the morning. I brought it up at her last checkup and was given eye drops to use. I used it for a couple of days and it cleared up so I stopped. Then it returned a few days later so I am using the eye drops again but doing it longer this time.

My daughter had surgery for it at 18 months. Her right eye was not bad and only needed probing, but her left eye was really blocked and needed a stent. The stent stayed in for about 5-6 weeks instead of the planned 3 months, but got the job done and we have had no issues since then!

My daughter just turned a year, and she also had a blocked tear duct still... It sometimes gets a bit better but it always goes back to bring goopy or drippy. My docter has also mentioned a surgery for it if it didn't clear up by a year, but he didn't mention it at this past appointment, and I'd really rather not have to do that.... We do use warm washcloths to massage it regularly.

@Mrs. Oatmeal: DS has just turned 1 and has had a blocked tear duct since birth! We have tried everything and he currently has to have this paste stuff put in his eye to keep infection down because as soon as we stop, gross gunk stuff is in his eye. I feel so bad for him he hates it. We have an appointment with an ophthalmologist on the 15th of October to discuss what to do. I've heard that the surgery is very simple and effective.

My second baby had a blocked duct for only 5 months or so. I just kept massaging it with clean fingers, and using gentle warm wash cloths on it. My ped said there are eye drops you can get- can you try something like that before surgery?

@Mrs. Oatmeal: my Los didn't clear up until 21ish months. We were referred to a pediatric opthamologist at 13 months and she wanted to wait 6 months to reassess before discussing surgery. I noticed it getting better around then and now it's a non issue at 25 months.

LO has had a blocked tear duct since birth. Her doctor has always said that the majority of these clear up by the time they turn 1, and that we would keep monitoring it.
Well, now she's 13 months, and it still hasn't cleared up. It is usually runny and goopy.
Has anyone dealt with this? I know there are a few surgical procedures that are done, but I don't know anyone who has actually seen this before.
