my husband has a blog where he uses his (and my, by extension) real full name, but it's about food so not personal at all (except about what we eat, haha). it's not a super high traffic blog, but he does get a lot of nice perks--companies send us free samples of things they want him to write about or he gets invited to restaurants for free meals because they want him to review it.

I have a blog, although it is far from popular. I am what I like to call "semi-anonymous." I don't use my real first name, but I do use my maiden middle name. I also have given enough details about where I live and went to school that it would probably take someone under 10 minutes of googling to figure out who I really am.

I chose to do it that way because I don't really care if people who read my blog know who I am, but I didn't want to be google-able. I don't want opposing counsel or a judge to ever google my name and find my blog. While I don't write anything bad on there (and I always keep in mind that I shouldn't write anything I'd be unhappy with my mother reading!), it is still personal and I don't want that much of myself tied to my real name.

I think it really depends on blog content, your online persona, and your comfort level. I used to occasionally pop onto a fairly popular fashion blog (mainly for kicks, I'm not fashionable in the least). Anyway, after the blogger let her anonymity slip, there was a huge backlash because people found out she works for a very controversial employer and it didn't sit well with many of her readers. I'm not sure how many people actually stopped reading altogether, but I think it was a fair number. I haven't looked at her site for a long time, not necessarily because of that but because I've had better things to do...but anyway, I think it's sort of a cautionary tale. I sometimes wonder if that blogger would have made the decision to lose the anonymity if shed known what she was in for.

@redsmarties: The farther I am away from everything, the less I care about what people read from the past, even the controversial stuff. But I can't exactly have students reading about my sex life! (Not that I wrote much about it.) I have already gone back and deleted posts that were very revealing about personal details. I'd probably go through again if I were to go public. I think if I wasn't a teacher, I'd do it. You're right that it would take a lot of effort to go through and read everything and only someone who was really interested would do so.

Yes, this is why it's an issue for me. Currently, I have no qualms about sharing my content with the world. But seeing as it started out as an infertility blog, I'm wondering about people's reactions to earlier posts. That being said...I'm sure people won't go back and read all 2+years of archives. Right? Lol

You've all given me a few more things to think about though. Thank you!

I blog for myself and use my first name (same here on the boards). I don't mind revealing bits of info about myself, but I can't see myself using my full name. I also don't intent to monetize from my blog.

I'm still anonymous. I really want to be public, but I'm a public school teacher. That's the main thing holding me back right now. My posts are becoming more and more "generic" I guess over time, but I still keep the controversial ones prominent so that they can help others... I can't figure out a way to make it work unless I start over.

I only blog here. This is completely anonymous, right?! I mean I don't use my real name. ;)

To be serious for a second... I only blog things that I would share with the world.

I started out anonymous but transitioned when I linked my professional site to my blog (I'm a freelance writer). I do share info there but no names/photos other than me, and it's not overtly personal information.

I'm not anonymous on my blog, but I also don't reveal much personal information. My general rule of thumb is to not reveal anything I wouldn't want a stranger to know. I have one post with over a million downloads & that right there solidified my decision.

I think it depends on how much personal information you reveal about yourself. I have seen bloggers become successful but kept their family and personal details out. They made it all about home design or food.

Once you out yourself, i feel as if you open it up to a lot of criticism/unwanted comments that you could take quite personally.

I had a pretty popular anonymous blog. I ended up outing myself when I decided to start a business that I felt like I could drive traffic from my blog. For me, I did regret it, and ended up shutting everything down. I did reveal a lot of my personal life though and when strangers came up to me on the street, telling me about how they loved the post about my Mother-in-law, and I was with her, it was awkward. So I guess it depends on what you discuss on your blog

I've been blogging for over two years now, and now that my site is picking up some traction, I have a dilemma.
I've been largely 'anonymous' for the last few years, writing under a pseudonym, etc. However, now I want to dive into social media and other blog promotions.

If you blog, are you anonymous? Have you made the switch and 'outed' yourself? Any regrets about being a public blogger?
