My bloods were done in October and no cause for concern then, so I've assumed any shortfall is being made up by the iron in my pregnancy vitamins. I didn't know they checked it with the glucose test tho, and I have that on Monday, so presumably I'll have more up to date info then. At least of all the things they could find wrong with your blood, it's one of the easiest fixed!

My OB automatically started me on 325 mgs ferrous sulfate at 19 weeks. My naturemade supplement is 65 mgs of Iron, which the label says is comparable to above. And make sure not to take the supplement with calcium! It inhibits absorption.

OB said around the halfway point is when the body really starts ramping up blood volume, so that's why levels often tank in the 2nd tri.

@mediagirl: I was surprised to find that a lot of grains are enriched with iron these days....most breads and pastas have about 10%. and I've started snacking on cornflakes....45% RDA of Iron! I'm not a red meat eater, so I've been hunting alternative sources.

Yup, with my first set of bloodwork I was told I was borderline anemic and had to take iron supplements. I did. Then when we did the glucose test my iron levels had dropped again so I'm on two pills a day now.
Just be sure you're taking the right mgs! Ferrous Sulfate mg does not translate to iron mgs! I think that's why the one pill I was taking was not helping. The pharmacist gave me the wrong info!!!

Yup, I just had my glucose screen and iron test today. Four weeks ago, my iron was at 14. Today it was at 9. They told me to go on iron supplements and gave me lots of iron rich foods to eat. Unfortunately there aren't a lot of foods on the list that I like...guess I'll be eating a lot of nuts and nut butters. :)

I had to take an iron supplement after the birth of my son. I took something called Floradix and it didn't cause any constipation, which is something I struggle with normally while on iron pills. If you can't find Floradix and you become constipated, try adding some ground flax to your diet.

My doctor has ordered me to start taking iron pills after my glucose results came back around week 27. I've been taking Slow Fe slow release iron supplement. So far so good--no side effects.

not only am I anemic with this pregnancy, but I also have a clotting disorder already, ha. so I'm with you. I've been taking iron pills since my glucose results came back, which is when they tested for my iron levels as well I guess. I don't know how low my levels are/were, though.

I had low iron levels (a 7) too. So they had me on iron supplements. The only problem was that it caused constipation so I also took Colace for that. After the baby was born, my iron levels were still slightly low but not low enough for me to have to take iron pills.

@Mrs. D: My glucose tolerance test results showed that my iron levels were low so by OB told me to take an additional iron supplement. She also mentioned that taking those iron supplements will harden your stool so recommended me to up my fiber as well.

I had a slightly low iron when my ob panel at the beginning of pregnancy but she didn't seem too concerned at the time. I should probably really make sure I'm getting enough or I won't be able to have my homebirth. =/

I had my latest doctors appointment this morning, and learned that at my blood tests last week, my results show I have an iron deficiency. I've always known I've had lower levels, but I had enough to donate blood.

Most people have levels of about 20 according to my doctor, but my levels showed at 2, which means while I'm low, baby is sucking most of what I have.

She said if I don't shore up on iron now, I could end up bleeding A LOT during/after labour.

So, I picked up a bottle of iron pills to start taking today.

Anyone else have low iron levels?
