@T.H.O.U.: lol, an extra set of hands should come with these services!

@Corduroy: so much for bringing the family together! The other thing I found interesting was just how much olive oil I used. The food didn't taste oily, but my goodness every other step called for it.

I saw a commercial for Plated. Ahhh the TV meal times look so blissful.

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: I tried two meals free during a recent promotion. One was General Tso's Chicken and the other was Pork and Braised Cabbage. DH was not interested at all. While I made the chicken he made lamb chops and veggies for the kids. They cooked them, ate them and cleaned up before I sat down to eat.

The Pork and Braised Cabbage was just funny because I had just made Pork and Braised Cabbage the night before from a massive Costco pork pack DH bought. That was slightly faster cooking but mine was much better in IMO. Both meals took a ton of dishes and were much more sugary that we usually eat. I cancelled.

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: Hahah, I just signed up for HelloFresh as a black friday promotion. One of the options for the week was chicken skewers. I read the recipe though and it said you had to handle the chicken to put it on the skewers! No Thanks!

Reviving this thread. Just cancelled Blue Apron. :meh:

A client sent me my first free meal. That first week was fun. Then, the recipes all called for frying foods. I am scared cook and hate frying. Plus my kitchen experience was nothing like the commercials- couples prepping together and smiling kids helping out. It was more like trying to placate a crying baby who wants to be picked up, but I have raw chicken guts on my hand. Even with DH at home his idea of helping out was watching the baby.

So yeah. Blue Apron drop out! I did pick up a smoked trout recipe I will use for parties.

We use Blue Apron! Dh is a big cook, so he can make the meals pretty quickly and easily, so the perk for us is that it takes out the work of menu planning. We used it for awhile and then stopped, but then got in a rut of shopping/menu planning where we never seemed to have the right ingredients to make anything interesting, so now we're back to using it again.

For pre-cooked meals in Boston try Cooking from the Heart. My FIL got us a gift certificate to them and they deliver them right to your house. They even have dessert options. We liked it and it helped us our during our crazy "homeless" summer we had. We haven't kept up with it because I "like" to cook and theoretically have the time to do so right now.

@Mrs D: Cooksmarts.com is a web based meal planning service. They set you up with 4 meals a week. you can make what is in the meal plan (customizable for size 2-8 portions and dietary needs, Vegetarian, Paleo, GF or Original). The website will put all of the ingredients on a shopping list for you and also provides prep instructions with the number of days ahead of time something can be done without going bad. Obviously they also then provide the recipes.

For my family it works out really well. I shop and prep on Sunday, and then assemble & cook on the week nights.

Blue Apron has all their recipes available online. You can see what is/was on the menu for the past, current, and next weeks and buy ingredients yourself, or search all the recipes to plan your own week of meals. I have liked the recipes I've made so far, and while some of them are kind of labor-intensive, it would be easy to buy pre-chopped vegetables and other shortcuts from the grocery store and probably still come out ahead on price. I have no interest in getting deliveries because the packaging waste would drive me crazy, but I really appreciate being able to use the menus and recipes anyway!

I've done Hello Fresh a few times and I agree - way too much work for a weeknight. All it's really saving me is going to the store and if I went to the store, I can buy a lot of the ingredients already prepped like chopped onions and chopped cilantro.

We do Blue Apron and we like it. We like to cook but hate the planning aspect of it, so Blue Apron is perfect for us. The delivery schedule in our area happens to be weekends (Thursday or Friday) so we use it as a way to have an at-home date night where we cook together and have a glass of wine. But we generally don't do them on weeknights (except Thursdays, like tonight - just had BBQ salmon), we already like to cook as a hobby (so it's fun to work with different ingredients without having to buy a bunch of something we might not always use), and we only have one LO who goes to bed at 7pm.

Definitely liked blue apron more than hello fresh because of the cost. One hello fresh meal was ground turkey, steamed veggies and pasta. Yeah, I can do that for 10 bucks. Both hellofresh and blue apron seemed really carb heavy, like lots of pizza. I love pizza but not every week. We ended going to cook smarts and love it

We get it every few weeks. Besides all the packaging we love it. Although there's a lot of prep, the steps are simple. So DH, who NEVER cooked before usually cooks while I do LO's bedtime. So for us it's not so much about convenience but effectively allows us to shift responsibilities around. Sure DH could meal plan, go to the store, and cook something much cheaper, but that's never going to happen.

I agree, I turned down our Blue Apron invitation because if I'm going to spend that much money on dinner I expect someone else to cook it.

@bluestriped bee: it sounds perfect for before kids, when maybe you don't have time to shop AND cook, and especially if you are a little newer to cooking. I get it.

But now when I can't really start cooking until the baby is asleep at 8:30? Not so much.

Eta: typing this as I snack on frozen meatballs that I microwaved for my toddler. That's more how I roll at the moment. Despite my screen name which is clearly from pre babies.
