My niece did have this (diagnosed after recurrent UTIs and fevers) and had surgery at the Childrens when she was 1. She did great and has been fine ever since. We had to get my DD checked out for reflux when she was 5 months old and had a UTI. Make sure she goes to a place that is a pro at catheterizing babies! It was horrible.. we had 2 nurses try and catheterize her and she was hysterical. Initially thought it was a UTI but it developed into a kidney infection and renal reflux from E. coli. He was in and out of the hospital the entire time. She did great with her shot and her fever is ALL the way down with the ibuprofen she took this morning, so that's good to know. </p> <p>So the bacteria growing in her urine is an antibiotic-resistant e.coli. Just what every mother wants to hear is growing in their baby's bladder. :( Antibiotic-resistant sounds really scary, but all that really means is that it's resistant to most commonly given antibiotics, including the bactrim she was getting. So she's on CEPH now, and that should kill it along with the fever. She's gonna be on it for 2 weeks, and it will probably give her some tummy issues (she's already having very runny stools from the original antibiotics) so we're gonna pick up some probiotics tonight to mix into her yogurt.</p> <p>My poor baby. We're also going to look into the possibility that she has reflux, in that urine is refluxing back up into her kidneys. It's not uncommon, and this issue usually resolves itself, but might as well get it checked out. They have a suspicion but no final confirmation from the lab yet (but are "expediting" it... uh, AFTER the 48 hour window?) but are confident they'll have it by the time we get there with her.</p> <p>According to our nanny, she's at home happy as ever and just went down for her morning nap. Still waiting for the call back. At least the nurse was kind. But the timing of it all (considering she is a 10 month old baby) is really upsetting. When I hear that I'll know results of a urine culture in 24-48 hours on Monday morning (AND we got a call confirming that there was bacteria growing, so obviously the hospital HAD the urine culture going starting Tuesday morning) I expect the results within the 24-48 hour window. Not AFTER the 48 hour window has passed. </p>
