Thanks everyone!
Went in but by the time I was there it was already resolving. They think it could have been a migraine but suggested seeing an ophthalmologist, particularly if it happens a third time.
The human body is weird!

@gingerbebe: wow! That's really interesting and a little scary. Thanks for sharing your story- I'm going to follow up with an eye doc if it does happen again.

If it is just part of your vision, could it be a silent migraine?

My vision did get worse during my normal, healthy pregnancy with my son and it IS common, but it was really more like my eye prescription got worse and once they adjusted it, I was able to see and it was fine. And a lot of my friends had their Rx get worse in pregnancy and then go back to whatever it was after they had the baby.

BUT the KIND of vision loss you are describing concerns me. I'm really not trying to freak you out, but I have sort of a unique personal experience with this. I would try to seek an ophthalmologist and have them check your entire optic nerve out. I had something similar happened to me during a previous pregnancy where my left eye went blurry seemingly overnight and my peripheral vision was just totally off, making driving and all sorts of stuff not feasible. It turned out to be a benign brain tumor called a meningioma that was pressing on my optic nerve. My optometrist couldn't correct my vision with an Rx change, so she sent me to an ophthalmologist who ran all sorts of tests. When they did the visual field test, my line of sight in my left eye looked like Swiss cheese - like I wasn't able to see in pockets of areas - which explained why they couldn't just change my prescription. However, they also couldn't find anything technically wrong with my eye! So they ordered an MRI to see scan the part of the optic nerve that runs back to the brain and that's where they found my tumor.

Meningiomas are often diagnosed during pregnancy because they apparently feed off female hormones (and thus are found most commonly in women) and your pituitary gland is pumping out lots of hormones during pregnancy so they grow more rapidly. The tumor itself is benign, but if it starts pressing on important things, like your optic nerve, if it can atrophy the nerve and make the vision loss permanent.

In my case, they had to do a brain surgery to remove the tumor. My doctor couldn't guarantee my vision would come back because he had no idea how long my tumor had been pressing on the nerve, but I regained most of the vision back so he thinks the nerve was just bruised.

Again, it could just be totally pregnancy related, or it could just be neuritis where the optic nerve is inflamed from stress or some environmental factor, but yeah, I wouldn't go to the ER over it, but I would definitely try to get a firm diagnosis.

I lost my vision for a few minutes during my first pregnancy, went in for all the tests and they decided it was a migraine.

I would call after hours. Acute changes are more worrisome than general long term blurriness... Plus if you are worried about parenting that is super blurry!

I'm pretty sure I read about that in the Mayo Clinic Guide to Pregnancy - something in your eyes change, and blurry vision is common! I would still bring it up to your doctor, but I'm pretty sure you're fine :)

Hello!
Last week my vision went really blurry- like all my peripheral vision was wavy static- for several hours. My blood pressure was low/normal and there was only a little protein (dr said normal amount) and I took a nst that was normal. It lasted for about six hours and then slowly cleared up.

Today it's happening again, is this normal? I keep seeing that vision changes during pregnancy are normal and sometimes not normal. I can't decide if I should call the after hours line or just see if it clears up.

I'm home alone with my toddler and can't see well enough to drive, and I'm worried about not seeing clearly enough to parent well.

Any advice? Any weird tips that helped you if this happened besides changing the screen font to ginormous?
