@MsMini: Yikes, I'm not sure about that. I did BLW, but I just backed off when she gagged. I don't think the two absolutely have to go together.

@jetsettermomma: oh cool our little ones are around the same age. She's going to be 8 months the week after next. I started the same way you did. Then I just didn't follow through. I'm ready to get back to it now.

You have to have nerves of steel for BLW. I think S gagged every meal for the first 3 weeks. It really freaked out my IL's

@katsupgirl: M will be 8 months on Monday. We started BLW & purees a couple of days before he turned 6 months (wanted to do a trial before his 6 month appointment just in case) but we did stop a few times (trip, sickness) and resumed after our trip/he felt better.

I totally agree that the gagging is nerve wracking. I think I scared him so much each time I fished out the food and I was absolutely terrified trying to find it, wondering if I'm making it worse :(

It's ok to end the experiment as soon as LO gags, I did it many times and probably will many more times!! :)

@jetsettermomma: how old is your LO? I've been playing with BLW and as soon as she gags the experiment is over for that meal. The gagging is nerve wracking.

@mrskc: The first BLW food we've given him that he did not spit out was papaya. He loved it :) He still hates puffs and makes funny faces when they make it into his mouth and then he spits it all out.

@mrskc: @PurpleUnicorn: Thank you! I still hold my breath when I see him get a chunk of food off whatever he has in his hand but for the most part, I feel less paranoid.

Nice! We've been doing BLW for over a month and he still hasn't got the hang of chewing and swallowing food. He mostly spits it all out.

So, after about a month of trying a combination of purees and BLW, I think I've finally gotten over my fear of the gag reflex! Each time DS started gagging, I panicked and fished out the food from his mouth without giving him a chance to work it out himself. I was finally able to restrain myself one day and stayed calm enough to coax him into doing more chewing motions and he got through it. Now, he can swallow rice (and similar sized food) with very little gagging if at all! Phew!
