@blackbird: No idea yet! But like you said, we have a long time to let it off-gas! It can just sit in the basement until we're ready to use it.

What are you staining it with? Something robust like a polyurethane (which will smell at first, so definitely let it off-gas, but hey, you have time!) should last a REALLY long time.

Okay, I think I'm going to try using a more permanent stain on the Tripp Trapp and only deal with it once. I also have to confess that we have an Ikea Antilop as a backup! No need for more chairs!

@spaniellove: @looch: We have the Tripp Trapp (and love it), with the tray. I have been using the tray for now because it's easier to keep LO's food in a "contained" space, but as soon as he can use a plate I'll try it without the tray and just pull him up to the table.

We had a Boon Flair and had trouble with the lift on it, so we exchanged it for a Phil and Ted's Poppy. We can pop almost every piece of it in the dishwasher, and it has been a lifesaver for BLW!

@looch: They've had a tray for at least a few years, because we considered it when I had LO in '12. I was surprised too, but I assume it's for just this situation.

@spaniellove: oh wait, they make a tray now?

That's interesting, because the whole point of the Tripp Trapp was to have the baby sit at the table and not use a tray.

@looch: Definitely leaving that to DH. He sanded and stained our giant deck last summer.

I'd just register for the tray, but I tend to prefer less gear. DD is a messy eater, and she's independent and always wants to feed (smear things on) herself. I liked the idea of her being pulled up to the table in the abstract, but in practice, I was so glad she had her own space I could easily wipe down. I would think that a quick wipe down quickly after each meal would suffice without a second chair.

My son is a neat eater, he used to scrape bits of food off his bib when he was under a year of age, but I don't think I'd be up for staining and restaining a Tripp Trapp. That is just too much work!

@septca: They do make a tray. It's sold separately but I figured if we didn't register for the Boon chair I'd register for the tray!

@spaniellove: Knowing what I know now - thanks @MamaMoose!!! - I would say that I would rather have a chair with a tray for BLW.

@septca: The Tripp Trapp is actually meant to be pulled up to the table and used without a tray. But the seat itself does get food on it... because, let's be honest, babies are messy!!!

I find our Tripp Trapp pretty east to keep clean... but our came stained.

Does the company make a plastic tray that snaps onto the wood tray? Most of my friends who have wooden high chairs have something like that - it snaps on for eating and can be washed/go in the dishwasher, etc. That seems to be a good option.

My DD is a very neat eater, but she still makes a huge mess of her high chair tray at every meal, especially if she is eating something "staining" like pasta with red sauce or curry.

There's a food sealant spray that ppl use when they're re-doing old wooden high chairs that's supposed to be good.

To make it easier tho, I'd just do the boon flair!

I know this is early! But I've been thinking about this because of my registry. So we have the version of the Stokke Tripp Trapp that you need to stain yourself before using it. I didn't realize until recently that you need to touch up the stain every six months or so, which made me wonder if their provided finish might not hold up well with food stains. (Or maybe I'd just use a more durable stain once and be done with it!)

If you were in this situation and were going to try BLW would you just get a Boon Flair and save the Tripp Trapp for later down the road? I hate to be wasteful but don't want to be kicking myself either.
