we did the same - we did purees for about a month with a mix of BLW, then transitioned to full on BLW.

@regberadaisy: This is how we did it!

We started purees at 4 months and then started giving her chunks of food at 6 months. At 8 months, she can feed herself and eat most of what we eat. We still do a little bit of purees too though.

Cool. :-) We have done purees and now added in some sweet potato strips (cut out of a cooked sweet potato. Last night we tried to give her some turkey from our belated Christmas dinner, though and she kept gagging on it. My husband wants to go back to purees now. :-(

I'm so excited to have learned about BLW on Hellobee! My sister and best friend were all about making their own babyhood and are trying to get me on that train, but I really like the idea of introducing the real foods early on. Seems like a great way to develop motor skills in addition to good nutrition. Glad to hear you are having good success - especially starting with purees and quickly moving to BLW!

We did the exact same thing! BLW is awesome. My daughter wanted food way before she could pick it up, so she was spoon fed for a long time. Now if you try and tries to swat the spoon right out of your hand.

@regberadaisy: Yay!! That's great to hear. We're the same way with DD. She eats just about anything that comes off of our plate and hates to be fed from a spoon.

@Bao: yay! You're welcome! I started with purées then making them chunkier to start.

@sotomorrow: I started with small teeny tiny chunks of soft vegetables. Such as carrots, squash. I just gave it to her from our food.

We just started BLW last week. I'd love if anyone wanted to share what they fed their LOs at 6 months and how they prepped the food.

We do a mix of BLW and purees. But, DS, LOVES when he feeds himself. He often gets frustrated when I don't feed him fast enough, but loves to feed himself. I'm really impressed with him and how much food he tries and likes!

Thank you for sharing this! I have a closet full of purées to start in 2 months because I was certain I didn't want to do BLW. After reading this, it made me think I can start off slow, by doing purées, then slowly adding in real food. I'm excited now!

we did purees for 2 weeks too because olive's fine motor skills weren't good enough for her to feed herself. once she got a taste of feeding herself, she hated being fed. she still hates it to this day -- if you try to put food in her mouth, she takes it from your hand and feeds herself! meanwhile.... charlie still loves to be fed.

Just wanted to share our journey to BLW.

The first time I heard of it was almost 2 years ago when my cousin in law told me about it. I was terrified of the thought! How would I know the difference between gagging and choking? If she was choking, I don't know baby heimlich!!

But thanks to @mrs. Pen: she mentioned that she actually started with purées then moved on to "real" food.

I kept that in the back of my mind when we started solids at just before 6 months. We probably did purées for 2 weeks before I started giving her tiny chunks of real food when I felt she was better at eating. I slowly increased the size of her chunks. Now at 8 months she is 90% all BLW.

It is SO much fun watching her truly enjoy food! She has loved everything except bananas! Her current favorites are smoked salmon, meat in general especially pork chops! And hummus with anything! I love that we're raising a little foodie who eats and tries everything! She's officially tried more foods than grandpa! Haha

Anyway just wanted to share and let those who haven't started solids you don't have to dive straight into BLW!
