@BabyBoecksMom: Chunks are usually... I don't know about the size of an adult pinky nail? Definitely swallow-able. Not that he often swallows them!

@mewtill: that is such a good reminder!

@FutureMrsMcK: @T.H.O.U.: @prettylizy: @yoursilverlining: @sarac: thanks for chiming in! all i kept reading was about how normal gagging was - so glad to see others have also had minimal gagging!

@MUI831: yikes! that would freak me out, I'm sure.

@katsupgirl: haha so true. I try to not over-analyze but sometimes my brain gets the best of me.

No, my blw daughter never gagged. I'm actually really opposed to continuing to offer food if a child is gagging. Gagging isn't OK.

LO has never really gagged on food. Maybe once or twice a little in the beginning but that's about it.

DD barely ever gagged, though when she did I just trusted that her body was reacting to oversized bites and doing the right thing. Try not to stress too much and just enjoy your LO's explorations with food :)

@MUI831: I'm so close to being a BLW drop out too! The gagging is so unnerving.

He probably is efficient but definitely still keep and eye on him.

It's so crazy being a mom. You worry if they gag. You worry if they don't gag. Can't win.

Ugh, I'm jealous. We are BLW drop outs b/c DS gags and then throws up every single time. I think his gag reflex is more pronounced or something. We have been trying for a month and no change. So we're going the puree route, which he loves. From what I hear, some kids take to this very naturally.

E only gagged once or twice at the very beginning, and occasion now when he takes too big a bite. He mostly just spits it out, picks it up and tries it again, lol.

Yeah, he could just be a "natural". It sounds weird to say, but I'm sure your little guy will gag eventually & get to practice that skill. Just don't get a false sense of security and stop watching him eat. My son got better and stopped gagging all the time, but every now and then he does & I'm glad I'm there to watch him work through it.

How bug are the chunks? I wouldn't think it's a bad thing, but I wouldn't take my eyes off him, just in case. If he's moving food around and swallowing it successfully, then it looks like he was just an efficient eater.

We started solids at 6 months when LO was showing signs of readiness. We've done a mix of homemade chunky purees with me loading the spoon & letting LO guide it plus hunks of "real" food like half a banana, pear slice, apple slice, etc.

LO hasn't gagged once. He has gnawed off hunks but spit them out and I thought all was well. My mom keeps focusing on it and telling me how it's a choking hazard and while she is well meaning, it's stressing me out!

After trying to find some things online to send her, I'm a little weirded out that I keep reading gagging is good, it's moving food to where it needs to be...so what does that mean if LO isn't gagging at all? Should this make me more or less worried? Has anyone else had this happen?
