Love all this feedback. I start my son on purees a couple years ago... but am doing BLW (or really whatever is easiest!) with my daughter. The first thing she tried was black olive! ha.

I still mostly give her broken up bits she can feed herself.. but this post has motivated me to try different things. A carrot stick keeps her WAY more entertained while I'm cooking dinner than a bunch of cheerios that she plows through in no time! I have the best photo with a floret of broccoli hanging out of her mouth too!

Great ideas!

I made this pork loin last night and gave him some and he loved it! I gave him some squash sticks with it and he was not a fan. I think he loved the meat so much b/c it had all the seasoning on top and more flavor. He actually shivered in disgust when he tried the squash. lol

A really likes avocado and banana. We started with avocado but have done banana, sweet potato, broccoli, shrimp(not sure if that is recommended but she loved it), cantaloupe, yogurt bites, yogurt, peas, and carrots. She still doesn't actually eat much of it she spits most of it out but loves tasting new things and feeding her self. I have had a few scares when she gagged but she has never chocked on anything.

This thread is so useful! We started playing around with BLW a week or so before she turned 6 months. Her first food might've been steak. We thought it was funny but I got nervous and took it away pretty quickly. Well after we took pictures and video first. LOL! She's had sweet taters, broccoli, carrots, a taste of mango and avocado. We tried avocado cause she seems to like guacamole. She mostly plays with her food which is fine cause the gagging is nerve-wracking. Yikes!

@mrskc: I was just curious, because we started a few weeks before 6 months (he was sitting up, grabbing, etc), but then he didn't really seem to like anything. He would just spit it all out. Now he's doing better and I thought maybe it was because he's older?

Also, he gets some purees at daycare (no BLW for them!) and he seems to like those better than the whole foods. I figure we'll just do both: BLW at home and some purees at daycare.

Subscribing! What great suggestions! We started DS on purees about 2 weeks ago, a couple of days before he turned 6 months. Over the weekend, we gave him a big piece of a banana and he held it in his fist as he tried to gum and suck it. Today, I tried the same thing and he did the same but then decided it would be fun to toss it to the beagle. Excited to try meat :)

I just want to subscribe to this thread. We're also in the camp of giving purees but hoping to transition to BLW whenever we get the courage. I'm trying to give her new foods at lunch every day but it makes me so nervous so I'm hoping getting ideas for foods will help!

@MsMini: Adorable! I'm going to make a pork loin this week, so I figure I'll give him a slice and see what happens.

Thanks all for the suggestions. Anyone use the BLW cookbook? I'm thinking about buying it but not sure if it's worth it. I wish I would have just bought it instead of the regular book.

S's first foods were pork (from a stew, cooked with spices like cumin), oven fries (regular, and then sweet potato), steamed baby carrots, steak fingers, chicken, then steamed broccoli. Honestly, we just fed him whatever we were eating. This is a picture of S with a chunk of pork at just after 6 months (probably 6 months 2 days old).

@mrskc: I didn't even give him a chance to spit it out I guess, lol...maybe we'll work up to it! I have found that the purees I make him at home are much chunkier than store bought (just tried a store bought jar of peas yesterday) so it makes me feel like maybe he's at least getting used to some texture? (sorry for the threadjack!) (also I love the IG pics of A eating--he looks so big in his high chair!)

@mewtill: He'll be 6 months on Sunday. He was showing signs of readiness. Sits on his own and can put objects in his mouth and chews on them. I will give broccoli and carrots a try! He amazingly didn't gag on the sweet potato. Just took a chunk off and spit it out.

@TurtleDoves: @hilsy85: I was a little nervous, but he did just as the BLW book said he would. Got off a chunk and it just fell out of his mouth. I did get a little freaked and I was ready to scoop it out of his mouth!

How old is your DS? We started our LO around 5.5 months with steamed carrot sticks and then avocado. He liked both, but did gag some on the avocado. We tried banana (nope), sweet potato (lots of gagging, I think it needed to be softer), very ripe pears (very slippery, but no gagging and he liked it), and steamed broccoli.

Broccoli has been his favorite so far, with carrots a close second. The broccoli has a great handle and he can just suck the little tops off.

He's 6 months now and we gave him a bit of steak yesterday. It was unseasoned and cut so that he couldn't tear any bits off. He really liked sucking the flavor out though!

We just gave DS his first foods yesterday! We decided to go the baby led weaning approach in starting solids. Yesterday, I gave him some sticks of roasted sweet potato and a slice of pear. The pear was too slippery and he took some bites of the potato and spit it all out.

I was wondering what other foods you started with? I need some inspiration. Is it too soon to give meat?

I was thinking about steaming some baby carrots and also trying broccoli florets. Any other ideas?
