What if you tried giving your son a utensil? My son doesn't like to touch food with his hands, but he'll totally use a spoon or fork. In the early days, he had the spoon in one hand and the food in the other...just a thought!

I would say just keep trying. We didnt do full on BLW. She got purees and daycare and solids at home. I think it also helped for her to see us pick up food with our fingers and put in our mouth. Show him how to eat cheerios and such. Maybe start with something really flavorful.

I just wanted to add that from my experience, it's not a chewing thing. Mine CAN chew, he just doesn't want to. He got his teeth very early. He's been eating cheerios forever. He will put things in his mouth, give it a chew and spit it out.

I think it has a little to do with texture, but not entirely because he will eat some things but not others of a similar texture. Mostly I think he is just not interested in food.

I think that is indeed the philosophy as to why not to start with purees: so they learn to chew first. You will probably have to go the traditional route now of very gradually thickening the purees and then leaving lumps, etc. But, hey, keep giving him opportunities to gnaw at stuff too....why not. What I've learned about babies so far is that if you don't like something (or even if you like something) that they are doing, just wait because they change.

@baby98765: It's so weird how everything goes in his mouth! And then when it comes to food, he stares at it like he has no idea what to do with it!

Yes, mine is the same. Feeding has been a long and painful process for us! We're almost at a year and it's slowly getting better. There are a couple finger foods mine will eat but we still have to do purees as well.

I have a few more questions... I saw today @Mrs. Superhero posted on it, so maybe you can answer?

Did anyone's kids ever REJECT BLW? I started DS on purees (maybe that was my first mistake?) and less than a week later I tried giving him small pieces of food, and he looked at it and me like I was nuts. He wouldn't eat it. Instead he whined until I fed him purees.

I've tried not pureeing until smooth, leaving some texture and he hates it. He gags and spits out any part that isn't completely puree.

I keep trying because it would be nice for him to have some independence while eating, and he won't have it.

But he eats SO MUCH food, pureed food that is.
