@QBbride: what? My doc is very progressive and she is the opposite- she said babies get and should get their main food from breast for the first year. She is totally laid back about solids. DD is 6.5 months and we haven't really started but ped is on board with however we want to do it (blw).

To answer your question I am not sure. LO is teething and just took a huge bite of banana that I had to take out of her mouth... she is interested in food but that made me feel she wasn't ready for blw so I decided to wait. We might try purees but I am very laid back about it. No rush!

@grizz: Hah! This. We got the go-ahead for solids at 4 months and have been half-heartedly trying every couple weeks since then. She looks super interested in her food, will reach for it.... and then spit it out. :p

Like others have said, don't stress :)

My 6.5 month old always THINKS he wants food, but he spits every bit of it out and makes terrible faces. We will just keep offering until he is into it :) Don't stress!

Following as well.

On the topic of the ped's comments: My understanding is BM has enough calories but is deficient in some nutrients like iron and stores of iron present from birth can start to get used up around 6 months.

That's just silly. The whole reason for the phrase "food before one is just for fun" is because breast milk or formula IS enough.

Mostly commenting to follow because I intend to do BLW as well.

@QBbride: We did a mix of homemade, chunky purees and BLW to start at 6 months. LO couldn't have cared any less until about 7 months when he started being more interested, and at 7.5 months a switch clicked and he wanted his lunch! the next two meals followed shortly thereafter, and by 10 months he was definitely hungry and it wasn't an option to just skip a meal. He has been EBF/nursed so I have no clue what his milk intake looked like but.. he is now 12.5m, 24 pounds, 30 inches tall so... he survived just fine on milk alone for a few months :) Trust your gut!

@Arden: Thanks for the reassurance. I also disagree that milk doesn't provide enough calories but she really stressed the point and I wasn't going to argue with her about it, so I kept my mouth shut. I'm glad I didn't bother mentioning BLW to her.

I also mentioned something about the Diva Cup to her today and she asked me what it was, so she's clearly a bit clueless...

@MamaJ: @ALV91711: Thanks for your replies! I know I shouldn't stress, it's only been 3 days!

We do a mix and I say it took about 3 or so weeks for him to really get the hang of feeding himself. Almost three months later and some nights all he does is squish his food. But at least he gets the feel for it.

It took DS a while to get it. Maybe a month or two. He wasn't consistently eating solids until 8 months maybe.

agree with @Arden: don't stress and milk is providing him with enough!

I dont mean to be rude, but your doctor is wrong about milk not providing enough calories for a six month old baby. I'm very surprised a doctor would say that to you.

You really don't need to stress, I promise! He'll figure it out. It just takes some babies a little longer than others.

I just started BLW with DS, he's 6 months old. He puts evvvverything in his mouth (toys, books etc) but he hasn't been too interested in putting food (yams, sweet potatoes, broccoli, bananas) in his mouth. When did your babe start to figure it out??

He had his 6m appt with our family doctor today. She's very traditional with feeding so I didn't even mention that I was doing BLW. She said that milk alone does not provide enough calories for babies from this point on. I know that "food before one is just for fun" but now I'm stressed out about it...
