@kiddosc: thanks! I think I've read all of those at some point today and they were all helpful too. What would I do without HB??

tarabonno: This really is such a common problem, one I had too. If you search through the archives you can easily find lots of similar threads and kits of good advice. The big take away though is that you are the Mom, and you know your LO best, stick to your guns with whatever YOU (and DH) decide.

Thanks, everyone. This is so helpful. I'm sending written instructions that she be given a 3 oz. bottle every 2 hours, so a total of 12 ounces. Also asking that they try paced feeding and really push her paci, burping, and going to sleep after she is done eating if she still seems fussy. DH is dropping her off tomorrow, so this way all my instructions get there clearly!

I'll pick her up, so I'll be able to ask more questions then. It so helps to have other mamas out there to validate these things.

I had such a tough time with daycare and the amount of milk! Like some others suggested, I found a happy medium with sending four smaller bottles, and then leaving them some milk in their freezer, if that is an option. I think she ate more at daycare for comfort.

Also, while it is a pain, I also was pumping before bed from about 3 to 10 months to make enough to keep LO EBF, so if adding pumping sessions is an option that might help you have a little buffer.

@tarabonno: This is an issue I think almost ALL EBF moms go through with daycares. It seems like there are very few daycares that are really experienced with breastfed babies and they are used to the formula fed babies eating more at a time and being able to go longer between feeds.

How long is she at daycare? Have you done a weighted feed at all to determine how much she normally gets with you? Keep in mind that when she's with you, she may just find comfort in being with you, but it's harder for the daycare staff to comfort her and she may be eating more to get that comfort than she would if she was home with you.

I always sent four 5 oz bottles, but I was really insistent that they only ever give him three of them unless he was absolutely definitely hungry. It was a constant battle almost every day with my daycare until Xander started eating solids there consistently at 7+ months.

If you feel confident with the amount that you are providing, then stick to your guns. Another solution might be to send more bottles, but to put less in them. If you think she should be fine with 14-16 oz a day (which I would think she would be - Xander was fine with 15 oz and he ate on the higher end), then maybe put them in even 5-6 bottles with less so that they feed her more often.

Good luck to you! This is a constant struggle and I remember it all too well! <3

Ok - after some more reading and wonderful reassurance from you guys, I'm definitely going to push back. Today she had a 4 oz bottle at 9:50 and a 4oz bottle at 11:30, but then only ate 2.5 oz of her 2:00 bottle and didn't eat again until I fed her 3 oz at 5:30 (because they had started warming up the bottle but she fell back to sleep - ugh).

So... I'm going to send three, 4 oz bottles tomorrow and ask that they feed her roughly every 2.5 hours. I think she is begin comforted with the bottle. She often fusses a bit after I feed her but after she burps she's usually fine, or after you swaddle her and give her a paci.

I'm guessing there's a learning curve with the daycare start as they adjust to her and figuring out her cues.

I would absolutely push back. To me it sounds like they are comforting her with the bottles. I had the same argument time and time again with my DCP and I think everyone who has a BF baby will have it. DCP are used to formula and breastmilk is so different. My son will drink and drink and drink until he is overfull so the statement that he acted hungry does nothing for me. At 10.5 months he will still nurse 24-7 if I let him but now I can tell when he's bored vs hungry.

I send 4oz bottles, but I don't pump enough while I'm at work to keep up w/ that. So I usually have to pump in the morning and night to make sure I send enough.

I do agree with Grizz that she might be sucking for comfort, so they should try to use the paci.

Have they tried paced feeding? There are several articles and handouts online, but our caregiver found this one helpful. We still fed an average of 1.25 ounces per hour I was gone, but our caregiver changed the technique in which it was offered. She may have been wanting bottles/practicing the suck reflex for comfort since it was her first day in a different environment. A pacifier can come in handy for that situation.

@tarabonno: I think I would just send extra milk. Has she ever had formula? I know it's hard to give formula when she has never had it but I would probably send some extra in case she is still hungry after going through your milk supply. I also know just how hard this transition is so I hope this evens out and her hunger matches your output again soon!!

Hi everyone. LO started daycare yesterday and I need some bottle advice. She is EBF. We started practicing with bottles a few weeks before I went back to work and she takes them like a champ. She has never eaten more than a 3 oz bottle at a time and never acted hungry after eating one.

During her first day yesterday I sent four 3 oz bottles, thinking she'd probably only eat three. She ate all four, and the staff thought she seemed hungry afterwards and suggested sending more milk. She did nurse a lot on Monday and Tuesday before starting daycare, so I thought maybe it was a growth spurt.

I sent four 4 oz bottles today and she ate all four again! Problem - I never get enough milk when pumping for her to eat four 3 oz bottles. I almost always get exactly 3 oz when I pump - which seemed perfect because that would exactly replace the bottle that she ate.

So... do I push back and ask them to try with the 3 oz bottles and her paci, or do I keep sending 4 oz taking some from the freezer stash? Is it her 3 month growth spurt that will likely pass and she'll go back down to 3 oz? Is she eating more because she's in a new place and it's comforting? Should I call her pediatrician and ask him?

And yeah, sorry for being that crazy mom I swore I'd never be...
