@Jess1483: Oh yeah i'ts definitely a little sci-fi-y. For Patient Zero, the premise is that the bad guys were able to concoct a shot that killed off all of the body, except the brain. Basically, turning people into zombies. They want to wreak havoc on the western world (very jihad style) so the DMS military team is sent to stop them. They're always fighting the terrorists

It's fun :) and i don't usually do sci-fi!

@blackbird: Is it supposed to be kind of out there? If it's not supposed to be accurate, he's cool with it. It's when it tries to pretend that it's accurate that he's not a fan.

@Jess1483: well in that case, you will like the Jonathan maberry fields but maybe he won't. They're military sci fi-ish but really hard to put down. Very action packed. They're more like...a task force with bad ass weapons ;)

@Jess1483: Wolf Hall is really, really well written. Both her history and her storytelling are excellent (unlike a lot of the popular "history" non-fictions that are suspect on the history portion). The followup to Wolf Hall is equally great.

i read Forever by Pete Hamill and thoroughly enjoyed it too. it's long but interesting and might be a good vacation read!

You said he's read three of the Game of Thrones books, but there are actually five out right now (when he's done writing, there will be eight). Might have been a typo, but I thought I'd mention it in case he hasn't read all of the ones that are out.

George R.R. Martin said he was influenced by Richard Adams' Watership Down, which also happens to be one of my favorite books.

Lots of people who like GRRM also like The Name of the Wind.

It sounds like he might like Cadfael: http://www.amazon.com/Morbid-Taste-Chronicles-Brother-Cadfael-ebook/dp/B00LUZNVQO/ It's not fantasy, but a historical mystery series about a monk who solves murders.

One other thing I should mention as I look at some of these suggestions. DH worked in military counterintelligence, so he struggles with books/movies related to that field, not necessarily emotionally, but because they tend to be so incredibly inaccurate. So while I like them, I try to stay away from them for him!

DH and I both loved "Headhunters" - Jo Nesbo

From Amazon:
With Headhunters, Jo Nesbø has crafted a funny, dark, and twisted caper story worthy of Quentin Tarantino and the Coen brothers. FIRST TIME PUBLISHED IN THE U.S. NOW A MAJOR MOTION PICTURE FROM MAGNOLIA PICTURES.

Roger Brown is a corporate headhunter, and he’s a master of his profession. But one career simply can’t support his luxurious lifestyle and his wife’s fledgling art gallery. At an art opening one night he meets Clas Greve, who is not only the perfect candidate for a major CEO job, but also, perhaps, the answer to his financial woes: Greve just so happens to mention that he owns a priceless Peter Paul Rubens painting that’s been lost since World War II—and Roger Brown just so happens to dabble in art theft. But when he breaks into Greve’s apartment, he finds more than just the painting. And Clas Greve may turn out to be the worst thing that’s ever happened to Roger Brown.

Shortly after the new year, my family will be going to Hawaii for a couple weeks. I was thinking I needed to get some books to take with me and then remembered that I should probably get something for DH (he is so hard to Christmas-shop for, so this will help there, too!)

So, I'm looking for recommendations. He loved the Game of Thrones trilogy, but when I try to look for similar books, none of them really seem his type. He's not opposed to magical or fantastical elements, but I don't think he really likes "Fantasy" books in general (if that makes any sense--he generally reads more crime or thriller books than fantasy.) I also never read GoT, so I don't really know what would be similar. I think he liked the pseudo-historical aspect better than he liked the fantasy aspect.

Anyway, if after all that rambling, you have a suggestion, I'd love to hear it!
