@runsyellowlites: my brother read Garfield and loved it. Lol not a chapter book but it got him reading. He liked Shel Silverstein's poetry too, Where the Sidewalk Ends was always fun. My mom was pretty desperate to get any kind of book in front of him!

@runsyellowlites: there is another series that is similar to captain underpants, comic like, but not quite so much potty humor. It's "chicken nugget boy' series. You can find them on amazon. Also, if he gets bored by lots of words on pages, there are some fun books like, middle school is worse than meatloaf, that are not chapter books. Instead, the whole story is told by receipts, post it notes, notes to friends, tickets to a movie, etc. kids like it because they don't think they are reading! They just think they are peeking in on someone's stuff.

If he's interested in comics, let him read them! It's a start, and there are so many different kinds.

@runsyellowlites: I know some people who have been very successful with having their kids learn to read by playing video games.

He might really like Captain Underpants which is about a comic.

My husband said you should just let him read comics as well. He says there are some really good ones that are highly underrated.

@brownie: Thank you so much! I remember Sideways stories from Wayside School & The Indian in the Cupboard... both I think might be good in the future but probably a little difficult for him to start.

Right now I'm usually only successful getting him to read 1x a week... every other time ends in a panicky breakdown & me just trying to get him to calm down & try again later/the next day. He used to love to read so I'm really hoping that can be rekindled.

@Jennimac: OMGosh that is such a good idea! And I'll definitely add those to our list!

The Joey pigza books by jack gantos are great for boy readers!!! It's a male character, he does funny stuff, and is an easy read. Another series my boy students enjoy (even the reluctant, maybe lower, readers) is the lightening thief series by Rick riordan. One thing I suggest for my slower readers or ones that don't like reading is to read along with a book on tape. That way they are still reading it, but they get the added bonus of having someone keep the pace and add in inflection, etc. which is something lower readers don't necessarily do on their own. I think of some more and get back with you!

My husband suggested: The Mouse and the Motorcycle, How to Eat Fried Worms

Others I thought of: The Indian in the Cupboard, more scifi with the Bruce Coville Books, Sideways stories from Wayside School, books by Clements

@brownie: Thanks! I think the Phineas & Pherb might be a good place to start. Overall he likes bmx type sports, drawing, legos, & superheros so today he told me I should just let him read comics. lol

If he watches Phineas and Pherb they have some chapter books. We also got some Captain Underpants to read to our son (2 year old we want to introduce to chapters). I have also heard great success with the Redwall serious. I personally really enjoyed Eoin Colfer's Artemis Fowl books and Lemony Snickett a series of unfortunate events. For history, there are the My name is America books (they Dear America books for boys) which are like diaries of boys at different points in history.

What kinds of things does he like?

I'm needed some book suggestions for G! He's in the 3rd grade (will be 4th grade come August) but is still really behind in his reading.... after a traumatizing experience with reading in the 1st grade we've JUST gotten to where he doesn't break down crying anytime it's time to sit down and read. (it really was horrible).. Anyhoo, he's now excited about heading to the library & getting some books but I'm not really sure what might be good for him. He's read a few chapter books for his History so I'd like something fun that he'd maybe enjoy (he still, at this point, loathes reading).

Any suggestions for some easy chapter books for boys? I'd say the lower the reading level the better... something that could boost his confidence maybe?

Thanks ladies!
