Yay, thanks for this thread. I am 100% the same way. I really struggle to separate characters' emotions from my own. I can't wait for some new books!

What about Nora Roberts? She's a little Danielle Steele-y but not too bad. She also gets weirdly into paranormal business sometimes, but I love and reread the Brides Quartet and the Inn Boonsboro trilogy.

And if you like YA, I can't say enough good things about Sarah Dessen.

Chicklit, Jennifer Weiner. I just finished her most recent, Who Do You Love, and it was sweet and cute. My favourite is Little Earthquakes but the main characters loses a child to SIDS (before the book starts, not a spoiler) so you might want to skip that one. Good in Bed is another good one.

I totally loved the stephanie plum series! Technically they are sort of cop(ish)/often murder mysteries. But they are meant to be funny. Main character is a woman bounty hunter who has pretty much no business being a bounty hunter. :)

I hunt killers trilogy! Don't be dismayed by the title! It's YA about a teen who's father was a serial killer so he helps police catch serial killers bc he was raised by one. Not gory or anything bc it's YA. It was quick addicting reads for me.
Code name verity was good too! It took a few chapters to get in to it!

If you liked Wonder, you might like George by Alex Gino (about a transgender elementary student) or Out of My Mind by Sharon Draper (about a girl with cerebral palsy). I think they are both really well done.

The Glass Kitchen by Linda Francis Lee was light, fluffy reading. As is anything by Sarah Addison Allen, I especially liked Garden Spells. Beach Town by Mary Kay Andrews- all great chick-lit reads! Lisa Wingate has great light reads too.

I loves the YA dystopian series Delirium and Matched.

Ready Player One was a fun, fast read all about the 80's pop culture in a dystopian world.

I'm fairly certain all of those steer clear of those topics you want to avoid. It's been a while since I read some of them, though.

I just read The Royal We, which was written by the women from the Go Fug Yourself website, and it was very funny and pretty good. Very light reading but still a good story.

If you choose to go the John Green route as suggested above you may cry through parts of some of the books. It's worth it though.

I really like the Spellman series by Lisa lutz for light and funny (but not totally mindless) reading. If you liked the quirkiness of where'd you go Bernadette I think you'd like these too.

@babybean404: Ooh, that gives me more ideas then!

The Line series by JD Horn- a little bit darker, but I'm a huge wimp and could handle them
Anything by Sophie Kinsella or Emily Giffin.
Have you read the City of Bones books? Decent, for YA books.
I've heard great things about John Green and Maureen Johnson as well.

@Mrs. Oatmeal: yes I love chick lit! I enjoyed the night circus, discovery of witches, and divergent series! Keep the suggestions coming, I'm adding them to my check out list :)
I also like YA books--loved Wonder. I've also recently read Where'd you go Bernadette and I liked that one too!

Do you like chick-lit type books?
I really like Marian Keyes for fluffy reading. If you'd like something a little less romance-heavy, I enjoyed The Night Circus, A Discovery of Witches, the Divergent series, the Thirteenth Tale. I'm sure I'll think of more!

I have always been sensitive, and ever since having a baby I seem to be even more so. When reading books I get sucked into the characters and really feel their feelings--which can be pretty awful depending on the book! I also have a really difficult time reading about bad things happening to infants, or about infertility, or miscarriages.

I read the girl on the train based partly on recommendations from the boards. I was definitely sucked in but it was a painful experience.

With that said, does any one have any relatively light (but not Danielle Steele) book suggestions? Bonus points if it's likely to be available for kindle download through my library!
