Nana upstairs, Nana downstairs

I think this would be relevant. It’s a good book. It’s about a boy whose great grandma passes away so relevant.

I like the invisible string. I got it for my kids when their cousin received a terminal diagnosis. I didn’t end up giving it to them because there’s a heaven line in there and my kids have no idea what heaven is and I thought it would be confusing and not factual (for us). It’s a good book though.

The Invisible String is adorable. It isn’t directly about death and it’s not factual. But it talks about how we’re all connected by love and it touches on death. So it can ease any fears about dying or sadness about a death.
My cousin died very unexpectedly in April and I bought it for all of the kids in our family (his nieces and nephews and he also had 2 daughters). I also bought it for my son and 2 of his best friends when we moved. It’s such a great book.

My mom does several years before dd was born. She’s 4 and has definitely had conversations about it. Some of them have been a little scary for me, where she asks when I’ll die or is worried a friend will and I’ll try to respond as best I can.

One book I really like is The Two of Them by Aliki about a little girl whose grandfather dies. It is sad though, but that’s expected. Dh read it once not knowing what he was getting into and said never again!

@Foodnerd81: definitely a hard topic. He just seems to be stuck on it lately. :crying:

@psw27: I don’t have any book Recs, but Clara has been the same way since my grandmother died. She’s sad she died, she’s sad she hardly got to see her (this one hurts because I’m also really sad I didn’t make it happen that we saw her more), and worries about when she or I will die. We are barely religious but I do talk about how great grandma is in heaven, and I explained the funeral more as a celebration of the wonderful life she had. I think it’s normal, but not easy.

We have ‘Lifetimes’ which is kinda old school but it explains that plants, insects, animals all have a lifetime that ends with death. Then it includes people as well. DS hasn’t been too into it but he did ask to read it more after my grandpa and our dog died:

I am sorry for your family's loss.
My children were also sensitive on the subject of loved ones passing after a close family friend died. I found the following few books on Amazon (* they were subject appropriate for both my 4-yr-old DS and 11-yr-old DD):

I Miss You: A First Look at Death https://www.amazon.com/dp/0764117645/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_-WzxDbMMCH48C

The Memory Box: A Book About Grief https://www.amazon.com/dp/1506426727/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_GXzxDbGEN50AS

Always Remember https://www.amazon.com/dp/0399168095/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_-XzxDbE0S46A1

My newly turned 5 year old seems to be having a fixation on death. His great grandmother (he did not know her well) recently died and he asks questions about death on a daily basis lately. He has been really sad about death, growing up, getting older, when he is going to die, etc. He cried about it at daycare this week. I asked his pediatrician for suggestions but he said he didn't know any books off the top of his head.

I'm glad he's asking and not just internalizing his fears but I think maybe an age appropriate book that is comforting would help. My general approach to parenting is age appropriate factual responses if that helps. We are not religious but I have discussed heaven with him as a means to try and soothe him. Any great books you can recommend?
