I've been reading "The Color Monster" with my 2.5 year old. After each page, I ask him "what is something that makes you feel happy/sad/angry"? He doesn't get it yet, but we're working on it....
The focus of the book is on sorting out your emotions, so you don't "feel all jumbled up inside". Each emotion is represented with a color and a description of how it 'feels'.

@MamaCate: Yes, admittedly, I have struggled with this. His tantrums come from completely out of nowhere, so I get frustrated with a) trying to de-escalate him while he's spiraling completely out of control and b) trying to figure out what the trigger was. So thank you, that article is a helpful reminder.

@littlebug: absolutely! I think this can be so challenging as a parent too (from my own parenting of my fiesty 5 yo and the families I work with. Sometimes parents feeling depleted and overwhelmed really escalates the child in turn. So I try to keep my own emotions in check.

I think it can also help to think of these tantrums as an opportunity to teach your child about anger and think about what message we want to send. I really like the work of John Gottman on emotion coaching and we use it a lot at work. Here is a quick summary:
https://www.gottman.com/blog/an-introduction-to-emotion-coaching/

@littlebug: we also have had good luck with "when I feel angry":
https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/0807588970/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1491935517&sr=8-1&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_QL65&keywords=the+way+i+feel+books+by+cornelia+maude+spelman
This one talks more about coping skills and what to do when you are mad.

A few other ideas include:
-big feelings
-calm down time
-mad isn't bad
-when Sophie gets angry, really really angry

@MamaCate: That would be great, thank you! He really seems to be having these outrageous outbursts of anger that he just can't control. His teacher is trying to find other outlets (like the pompom activity and she also had him punch playdoh for 2 minutes). He's not physically hurting anyone, thank goodness, but he's purposefully broken some toys and I want to help him learn to manage it before it does get to the point where he's lashing out at his friends or his sister.

@littlebug: I am a therapist for little kids and I really like "the way I feel":
https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/1884734715/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1491916689&sr=8-1&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_QL65&keywords=the+way+i+feel+by+janan+cain

It really emphasizes that all our feelings are a part of us and helps build awareness of them. Lots of times when kids have these big feelings they can't articulate what is going on for them so grown ups who can help put words to their feelings can be really helpful.

There are some other ones I like about anger specifically--I will look them up after I am done nursing and send you a few more ideas.

@Kemma: While I was researching all this emotional stuff, I came across some information about sensory overload and some of it makes a TON of sense for D. I really want to dig into that a little bit deeper.

My little girl (4.5) is going through quite a clingy phase at preschool dropoff and I wonder if some of it is to do with the growing and developing that she's doing at the moment (lots of talk about starting school next year, starting in the "transition to school" programme at preschool). She's feeling the growing independence and counteracting it by wanting to be extra close. My girl is also very emotionally sensitive so small things set her off in a way that's way out of proportion to what's actually happened.

I'm trying to give her extra cuddles and physical touch / comfort to help maintain the connection but I have also wondered if heavy sensory activities might help with the outbursts.

If you mean books for you LO, we love the little Daniel Tiger songs. There are books in addition to the TV shows. And PBS has a new free app that has just the songs and ideas of how to talk to your kid about each emotion.

I don't have experience with LO being at school yet, but he has a special stuffed animal he likes to cuddle whenever he gets upset, tired, mad, etc. Would your LO do something like that?

Hang in there, mama. You're doing a great job.

Can anyone recommend any good books about emotions? Books geared for preschoolers, in particular. Our 4yo son is having major emotional outbursts and meltdowns, and even his teacher is commenting that they're these HUGE emotions and he kind of spirals completely out of control. He swings from pure joy to rage to sadness and back again, with seemingly no trigger. There seems to be no rhyme or reason to it. And they're just huge. In the past week, he's thrown and stomped on toys out of anger/frustration. He was so upset at dropoff this morning after I left that the teacher thought he was going to hyperventilate. When I ask why he's so upset and why he's behaving the way he does, he says it's because he misses me. His teacher had been putting him in timeout when he lashed out (like breaking the toys or hitting his friends), but she's decided that that just escalates him, so today she had him sit and put 50 pompoms back in a container, one by one. She said that seemed to help, since it sort of redirected the energy. But I feel like we need to address and talk about emotions better and hoping maybe someone has a book to recommend.

We've recently started trying to sort of "re-sleep-train" him - we had been having to sit in his room next to his bed until he fell asleep, which was taking close to an hour every night. We've started trying to leave the room and let him fall asleep on his own, and it went well for about a week and then suddenly he's crying before I even walk out the door, and we're having to do the checks on him. Usually it only takes one check about 5-10 minutes later, but it still feels awful because he's 4 and having these huge emotions as it is. So is he tired? Is he feeling neglected and so he's acting out? Is he reacting to the fact that his 14mo sister demands a lot of attention? Is this normal 4yo behavior and "this too shall pass?" Or is something else going on here? Do I need to talk to the pediatrician and consider taking him to a counselor?

I'm feeling really sad and frustrated and like a total failure of a mother.
