At 3 months old, DD does not enjoy story time yet. But we have taken to reading a book or two to her while she's eating her bedtime bottle. We read in a rocking chair with a little lamp on the side table for light. All the overhead lights are off.

I solo parent a 9 month old and 2.5 year old most nights. I turn off the overheads and turn on a lamp after bath time to set the expectation that it's time to be calm. I pick books for the baby and read those to her on the floor or in the rocking chair. DD1 sometimes listens and sometimes just plays in her room next door. I nurse DD2 while I say prayers with both girls. I put down DD2 with a song and then move to DD1's room. She chooses her own books (3) and we read them in her big girl bed together before her song and lights out.

We always read either Snuggle Up Sleepy Ones or It's Time t Say Goodnight last. We usually read a book before that and it just changes. Sometimes she picks, sometimes I do. I leave the overhead light on. It isn't the last thing we do. We do books, then into the sleep sack, light out/white noise on, then sit down and rock her for a song, then into the crib.

We have shelves and shelves to choose from but she always picks the same ones! We use the light from the landing.... although, to be fair, I know them by heart so I can read them in the dark!

He had a bookshelf full of books to choose from. We read a few a night, unless it's too late and then I let him take a book to bed with him. We just read with his room light on.

We have the overhead light on a dimmer so we make it very dim and put on the projector (stars on the ceiling). When he was a baby we always read Goodnight Moon and the Going to Bed book, but when he started to resist them we figured he was bored with the routine, so now I pick about 5 books and put them on his night table and he picks 3 of them to read (or if he's tired, we pick them). I change the books up every few days depending on what he seems to be loving and what I'm tired of.

@mediagirl: oh yes. He has three shelves full of everything from Brown Bear to Wizard of Oz! They're all within his reach too, I let him pick now but typically he only wants to read a page or two of everything!

We just read 2-3 a night with the regular light on. Before we turned the overhead light off and just the light on the bookcase was on. But now we are reading to her in bed, it isn't enough light due the placement of furniture.

We have a bunch of board books and she picks 3-4 each night to read. We usually read on the floor or in the glider in her room with the overhead lights on. Right now she loves the Courderoy books.

Xander usually picks his books, but he seems to really like Goodnight, Goodnight Construction Site, If You Give a Mouse a Cookie, and Corduroy and reads those over and over again.

We used to read at a chair with a table light, but now we just read on the floor with the overhead lights on.

My son usually picks the books he wants to read (he's 28m). Sometimes I'll hide a book or suggest something different. We read in his room usually with him on our lap (whoever does bedtime that day). We mainly use daylight in summer, used a globe that could light in winter. I haven't figured out which light to use in our new house yet (and it hasn't been an issue yet because of summer).

For my little one (7 months) I usually tell her stories from books I know by heart thanks to big brother. Sometimes we'll read books like the Sandra Boynton ones.

@Applesandbananas: do you have many books? We bought a ton at yard sales and consignment sales super cheap so we have a giant bookshelf full of kids books at this point. A wide range of books will give your son a bunch of options to choose from.

This has changed through the years. When she was a teeny baby, I'd read a portion of Alice in Wonderland to her every night. Once she was old enough to sit up with us while we read, we started with little picture books and board books like Sandra Boynton. Now we are on to other books - Little Golden Books, Nursery Rhymes and tales. At 3, she has to pick her books to read. We read 3 books with her in our room, on our bed, then we go into her room and I read her a book and then I leave and my husband has one on one time with her and reads her another.

The books we read just depended on what we felt like reading for a long time. We read our favorites and hid our least favorite books. :)

Oh and bedtime includes turning on the white noise machine, turning on the lamp that is next to the bed and reading by that. When my parents are here, we just turn on the overhead light because the lamp isn't too bright. We leave the light on all night (her request).
