There aren't a lot of fathers in children's lit. It may be a little early for these, but just off the top of my head, Dad is expressly not around in 'Treasure Island,' 'Harry Potter', and 'A Secret Garden.' (Those dads all die, but the father figure wasn't exactly a comforting presence in #1 and #3....) Even King Arthur grew up fatherless. I'd probably answer questions honestly now and then do these types of books a little later on.

A friend of mine is a single mom whose son has been asking why his dad left the family. Her son is around 4 years old, and becoming aware that everyone else seems to have a dad except for him. She isn't sure how to handle it.

I've found a lot of books about how to help kids process adoption, and other resources for kids who had a parent pass away. But I don't know of any resources for kids whose dad basically abandoned the family... I did a search on Amazon, but haven't heard of any of these books or authors:

http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=sr_nr_n_2?fst=as%3Aoff&rh=n%3A283155%2Cn%3A4%2Ck%3Asingle+mom+children%27s+book&keywords=single+mom+children%27s+book&ie=UTF8&qid=1452473494&rnid=1000

Does anyone know of any books or movies that can help kids process something like this?
