@bees_knees: I'm so sorry for your friend and her kids. It does suck feeling helpless and not knowing the right thing to do or say. Do you feel comfortable asking her what she needs? Maybe she wants to focus on her grief, or maybe she just wants a coffee date or something to take her mind off. One thing I hear a lot is that there are many people who reach our right after a loss but few who keep reaching out. Just let her know you're there and she can ask you for what she needs in the moment.

Thanks guys. I’ll hold off on the books for now and find something else to send. Just stinks feeling so helpless, ya know?

Option B by Sheryl Sandberg really helped me after I lost my father. But also agree that you may not want to send that yet. I wasn’t ready to read it for 6 months and the loss of a husband would likely be way more difficult than what I went through.

When my mom passed, a friend sent me a “box of sunshine” - yellow candy, yellow candles, yellow bath salts, rainbow window crystal etc. I’d probably do something like that rather than the grief books. Their pediatrician or local hospice can help recommend therapists and support groups.
Also I’d send a gift card for a local restaurant.

I’m so sorry for your/their loss, devastating

One of my friends just suddenly lost her husband. She has three kids, (two teen girls, an 11 year old son). I'd like to send her and possibly the kids a handful of books or journals. Anyone have any recommendations specific to widows or teens who have lost a parent? I do have "Grief Day by Day" which someone sent my when my sister passed, and I like that one.
