@Adira: Insurgent movie was not good. I slept through it, 2x - once when I was in labor!

As best I can recall, only the Princess Bride is a better movie than book. Lord of the Rings is close but they changed some things (Faramir for example) that messed it up. Other than that, the books are ALWAYS better in my opinion, even if the movies are good.

The only movie that ever came close to being as good as the book for me was The Help. I lovedddd both of them so much!

Hands-down the BEST movie adaptation I've ever seen was Atonement. It followed the book exactly and didn't leave anything out or add anything extra. Both book and movie are excellent.

@josina: Oooh, good one. The Martian is WAAAAAAAY better as a book! There's just so much missing from the movie!

Another one - I liked The Prestige movie better than the book.

I always try to read the book before the movie, and can't think of one where the movie was better.
I did think Gone Girl was a great movie, and love Maze Runner/Hunger Games/Divergent movies.

I think The Martian fell short as a movie, there was just too much left out. I lol'd reading the book, but not so much when watching the movie.

I loved the book 'Life of Pi' and was so disappointed in the movie - they left out so much stuff!!!!

in general the book is better because what you imagined in your mind when you were reading the book never aligns with the movie.

i thought gone girl was just as good of a movie as the book. and i enjoyed chicago the movie more than the live musical! the firm book and movie were equally great.

@Bao: I read the books when they came out, so I also don't have the greatest memory of what happened in them, so when I watched the movies, it was practically all new to me. I didn't like how the Maze Runner book series ends, and I get the impression from the movies (at least the second one) that they might go in a different direction, so I've been really enjoying the movies!

I really enjoyed both the Hunger Games books and movies. I thought the movie stayed pretty true to the source material.

The Princess Bride is always excellent, and the movie might actually be better than the book.

And so far I'm enjoying The Maze Runner movies MORE than the books!! Can't wait to see how they turn out!

The first Divergent movie was excellent, like the book. I haven't seen the second movie to compare.

The Harry Potter movies - while good, weren't as good as the books, which I think tends to usually be the case.

It seems like just about every book is a movie these days, so it got me thinking: what books did you love that you also loved the movie? What books did you love and didn't much care for the movie?

Overall, do you think the book is always better?
