Great thank you all! It sounds like both are safe bets (literally).

We have two different seats in mine and DH's cars as well - an Evenflo Triumph and a Diono Radian RXT. They also feel really different - weight, height, all of that. LO goes back and forth about which one she likes best fairly often haha.

What I keep in mind is that both are extensively safety tested or else they wouldn't be on the market. I don't think there's a functional/safety difference. It's more about a difference of preference when it comes to materials/car fit/ kid fit/etc.

No safety difference using a dedicated booster or a combination seat in booster mode.

@Becky: I apologize. I was reading your post while preparing lunch for my kiddos. I must have completely misread. To respond: I prefer the detachable boosters for both the longevity and comfort for my DS. My DD had a backed booster from 3-5 and she loathed it. We ended up purchasing a convertible system and she was able to [comfortably] use it until she was nearly 8 years old. In so far as "safety," I would read the safety reports on the particular models you are interested in and, perhaps, check the Consumer Reports webpage.

@Becky: I'm not a car seat expert, but I believe with the boosters it is really just for positioning. So as long as the child is properly positioned and the seat installs well in your car, it probably doesn't matter much. The Evenflo gets good safety reviews so I wouldn't worry about it

@Kaohinani: Thanks for the recommendation. I’m actually trying to figure out if one is safer than the other (sturdy convertible vs dedicated HBB that seems flimsier but fits great).

@Becky: I have a Graco Affix. The high back is removable from the booster seat base. My son is small for 4 so we keep it attached for the time; however, in my husband's truck, we have the Graco 4ever (which is also adaptable). Both can easily be transferred to another vehicle.

Does anyone know if there is a safety benefit to using a convertible/3-in-1 type seat in booster mode vs. a high back booster in booster mode?

We have been doing lots of car seat swapping with our crazy childcare this summer and my daughter has ended up in our EvenFlo Big Kid a lot. It’s a great belt fit, but it just seems so much flimsier to me than our Britax Pioneer which is like a tank. When she transitions to a belt positioning booster full time (still not quite there in my car as she falls asleep on longer drives still) I want to give her the option between the 2 seats, but only if the flimsiness doesn’t matter.
