Thank you, all! I really wish that we could afford two combo seats right now, but I can't. I found something recommended by the Car Seats for Littles for $30 and am getting those. The seats will be used to transport the kiddos to the grocery store, the gym, and school, all of which are less than 2 miles from our house. Anything longer than that and they'll be in my car with the 5 points. They will be five in two months, so we're pretty close.
Again, thanks for letting me "talk" this out!

I have a Graco Tranzitions. It's a harness to booster and transitions to a belted high-back booster and then a backless booster.

@T.H.O.U.: yep, it's actually the seat my son rode to school in today...even though I asked my dad to switch it out with the frontier in my mom's car because they do drive on the highway several times a week and my son does get tired on the way home and I can imagine him slumping in the seat.

@ShootingStar: I actually think practicing is a good idea. You don't know the outcome if you don't try.

@looch: Thanks! I was looking at that one and it looks like there is a newer version but I can't tell any differences. It looks like the shell height was pretty tall too?

@T.H.O.U.: We have the Graco Affix, I bought it from Amazon for around $60. I bought it for my dad's car, after he freaked out about another booster that didn't have the LATCH option.

@meganmp: Im starting to research boosters for my 6 year old. She already has one combination seat and has stayed harnessed in that. We now need another seat and I was debating getting just a booster .

I have read its nice to get one that has lower LATCH so you can keep the booster stable if the child isn't riding in it and potentially to help restrict movement in a crash. It looks like you can still find boosters under $100 with this.

However you can get a combination seat for around $100 as well. So if they are on the younger side, why not get a combination seat, keep them harnessed another year and then take the straps off and use as a booster?

So this might not be a popular opinion, but getting them high back boosters for your husband's car might be a good way to have them practice short periods of not having the 5 point harness.

Unless you really want them to have the 5 point for another year or two, in that case I'd get a couple of combo seats and keep them in the 5 point until you and they are ready to switch.

Car seat techs advocate for harnesses to 5 at a minimum, and switching to booster is about maturity in addition to height and weight.

Have you tried them in a belted booster, do you really know that they can sit properly in the seat the whole ride? My son doesn't, because he's constantly trying to see what's playing on the radio, what the cars in front of us are doing, etc. I was surprised.

We actually have a belt only booster that I bought for one of my parents to use, and I quite like it, but my son's just not ready for it full time.

My twins will be 5 at the end of November and I just noticed that they have outgrown our auxillery car seats in my husband's car. They are 46 inches tall and 47lbs each.

My question is- do I buy boosters? I know that they fit the recommendations (more than 4 years old, more than 40 lbs, can sit properly in the seat for the whole car trip), but I feel funny about it, possibly because I might be denying that my babies can ride without a 5 point. They will only be going for short trips with him- all of the long trips will be in my car in 5 points they still fit into.
