@sloaneandpuffy Nope, I emailed with 2 simple questions and the rep responded only answering one, and then when I asked if they could tell me what DMEs near me sold them, she sent me 3 that are over 200 miles away from my zip code, I emailed back to ask if there were any closer or how else I could find one... and got no response. :/ I know no company is perfect, but that scared me off! I also feel like 90% of the positive reviews and comments I read about them were from bloggers who received the pumps for free - I don't think that means they didn't like them, but it is a lot easier to love something if you didn't pay for it ya know! I think I"ll be getting a Medela through a DME instead, it makes me too nervous if something were to go wrong that they wouldn't respond.

@scg00387: I am surprised to hear you didn't like Hygeia customer service! If I could go back in time I'd get a Hygeia instead of a Medela. I follow them on Twitter and FB and have concluded they're the bomb.

I wouldn't borrow unless it were a closed system. Theoretically the milk shouldn't go in the system, but theoretically it should get into the tubing either, and that happened to me. I do t remember where but I read about people opening up their pumps and finding mold and stuff inside, yuck. To me it's just not worth it.

My cousin gave me her Medela Pump In Style Advanced that she only used for a few months and not frequently (she stopped breast feeding/pumping before she returned to work). I just ordered new tubing and parts from amazon. I just got her pump yesterday and I plan to take in apart as much as possible and clean it.

@sunny this is the blog post I stumbled across on why it is unsanitary (with pictures): http://mythnomore.blogspot.com/2011/08/why-you-shouldnt-buy-sell-or-borrow.html

with that being said, if I knew someone personally would who let me borrow, I'd be on board. I was intrigued by the Hygeia for this reason (100% closed, can resell/share) but was not impressed by their customer service via email - which scared me off since they're a small company/I can't get their "stuff" at Target.

Does anyone know why it's considered unsanitary, even with new tubing, flanges and bottles? I have the Medela pump in style and the milk never actually goes up the tubes into the motor.

I agree with PPs, if it's someone you know you should go for it! (I wouldn't buy one used off of craigslist, though, for example).

I borrowed a friend's (she actually gave it to me!), and it's a Medela PIS. She used it for her two boys and it's still been going strong for me, 12 weeks later. I did get new parts, as well, but couldn't find tubing at BRU. Ended up getting it at the Mother/Baby Wellness Center our hospital runs.

I plan to borrow my sister's, and I would borrow or lend to a friend, but I wouldn't buy a used one from a random person (even though I think even that would be fine). Unless I can get one for free, in which case I might get a brand new one to reduce the risk of it wearing out. I will be a SAHM, so I probably won't be pumping as much as someone WOH every day. I live in MA, though, so perhaps I get one for free with insurance.
ETA: I'd feel bad about 'scamming' the insurance company except they finally passed the birth control thing right when I stopped taking it, after paying $400 a year for it!

I borrowed both times. I just got my own tubing (got an extra set of supplies from the hospital when I had to pump there once). I think you can buy the tubing on amazon now. They say it's not sanitary and sharing voids the warranty, but the milk really never comes into contact with the pump so as long as it's someone you know (and you know doesn't have any kind of crazy disease) I would say go for it!
