I don't think the boss should be sharing that, but at the same time that's probably not something I would have told my boss in the first place.

@LindsayInNY: Being in HR, I can't agree with you more!

This makes me cringe! It has inappropriate written all over it...especially since it's her boss. Whether her pregnancy was planned or not, it's not his place to tell people that!

It depends on how she told him the information. My cousin is due 6 weeks before me and has no qualms with telling anyone that this one is a surprise, in fact shes phrased it as such on facebook.

I'd be bothered by it if it was me. Just because I told my boss, doesn't mean it's free public knowledge.

Your coworker might not care so it might not be a big deal, and it was so long ago. Who knows!

I agree with @Ash: - it's not coworker gossip (not that that makes it any better) but the fact that it's a boss is what bothers me. That's like HR doing the same thing.

Truthfully, if my employer were a larger company or had an actual HR, I might say something. Or say something directly to the coworker, just to give her a heads up.

@T.H.O.U.: Exactly. I don't know that it would bother me, per se, but I would think it was inappropriate to say it was a surprise pregnancy, but not that twins were a surprise (I feel like they pretty much always are, right?)

It would make me question how much of what I told him had made its way to general gossip too though.

Honestly, she should not have told her boss that it was an accident/surprise, but I'm sure she was emotional and just blabbing. I think guys don't realize as much as girls how information like that can be sensitive. I would surely be upset!!!

Yes, very much so. All that extra commentary is unnecessary.

I had a manager tell a coworker of mine y hat my grandfather passed away. I was pissed. She thought I told him because we were friends. I had not. And I only told her because I took bereavement leave. Managers need to zip it. Period.

I don't think it would bother me. Knowing stuff like this goes down in workplaces all the time, I wouldn't share anything (about whether it was a surprise or when we planned TTC) I didn't want passed around.

If the coworker in question shared this information with the boss in confidence, I'd be really upset. If it was common knowledge among the other team...I don't know. It still is a bit of an over share in my opinion.

@Sapphiresun: I had a lot of appointments too, which I had to explain to my boss at the time, so I feel ya! I just always assume whatever I say will get around, and so frame my sharing and don't assume anything will be kept confidential, but I also didn't trust my boss at the time at all!

Both of my bosses have a problem with sharing information that should be confidential. One has told others about a co-worker's fertility treatments. The other has discussed a coworker's serious illness with many people as well as confidential personnel matters with other staff (that are not in any way involved). One will even preface such information with "I probably not supposed to tell you this, but..." It makes me really concerned about what may be said about me, especially if I do get pregnant in the future.

It's hard to say if this is just jokey stuff or confidential matters since you don't know the other team very well. Still, it would bother me!

@yoursilverlining: Yeah, I do hope this is the case that she's been kind of making jokes about it or something so he assumes if she's happy to talk about it in front of people, it's ok for him to do so. But, in my case we've definitely had conversations about details I wouldn't want shared because I needed to explain why I was having more appointments than standard, that I did kind of assumed were in confidence, but am now kind of questioning!

It wouldn't bother me, sounds like normal work gossip. I would imagine she made a few lighthearted, offhand remarks about the surprise of the timing which he is now repeating. I assume anything I say at work might be repeated to a larger audience, but maybe I'm jaded?

That would bother me too but where I've worked it wouldn't be an uncommon thing to hear. I might just make a comment about wondering if she wants everyone to know baby was a whoopsie.

I commented on the thread about annoying people you meet when pregnant about how many of my male coworkers asked if it was planned or if it was an accident, usually followed up by a comment about DH and I being really 'busy' lately. These aren't people I talk about my sex life with so it was awkward. But even when I changed the subject I don't even think it occurred to them it was rude/weird thing to say and ask.

I work in a department that essentially has two separate teams of about 6 employees that work in separate buildings so we don't really know eachother. In our staff meeting yesterday our mutual boss was talking about how three girls from the other side are pregnant and that one of them "got a surprise about 5 years before they intended on having a baby, and another surprise when they found out it was twins".

So, I'm curious... I thought this was kind of really inappropriate information to share with people she's likely only met a couple times in her life. Am I being a total prude or would you be annoyed if your boss was sharing information like this with your coworkers "behind your back"?

I'm also 33 weeks pregnant with a pregnancy that's had it's share of (thankfully minor) complications that have required explanation as to extra time off for appointments and stuff, so it definitely makes me wonder what he's blabbing his mouth off about me!
