@IcebergMom: hello!! I would recommend back bay or south end, but those spots are probably pretty pricey. I would recommend as a cheaper alternative Cambridge, anywhere in walking distance to the Red Line. There are lots of families and parks and restaurants all along the Red Line and it might be cheaper to stay in a less central to Boston setting, but as long as you can walk to the train (less than 15 min walk to a stop would be best... google map it!) you can zoom right into downtown Boston for anything. If you go as far as Porter Square, the train ride to Downtown Crossing is no more than 20 mins. (it's been a while for me though!!)

I concur with @lindsayinny. The South End is awesome for young families, but the only drawback is you have to depend on the Silver Line for public transpo. Definitely doable, but you might prefer to be along the green or, better yet, red line. So my vote would be for Back Bay or Beacon Hill, and then South End in third place.

hey -- agree with @Lindsayinny: 's advice -- back bay would probably be the best if you can find something in your price range - beacon hill will also be great - also, the "West End" is sorta over near Mass General Hospital and is pretty close to everything you'd need to walk around -- also could be more affordable. South End is also great, but depending on where you are you could be far away from the T. Cambridge is also a great option as the Red Line T is fast and you can get into downtown easily, Cambridge spots along the T are: Porter Square, Harvard Square & Kendall Square -- Kendall is the closest to downtown Boston, and you could walk over the bridge & be in Beacon Hill quickly... Harvard/Porter are fun, but definitely further away - it depends on what you want!

The city is pretty small/walkable so any of the areas I mentioned above are close to parks/playgrounds and great restaurants.

Again, Back Bay/Beacon Hill would be my first choice as you'd be in the center of it all, very near restaurants/shopping/great walking/charles river, etc. ;)

@Foodnerd81: Thank you for clearing up my opinion! That's basically what I was getting at, LOL.

I would look in/around Back Bay, Beacon Hill, South End (if you're close to the T), North End, Waterfront might be nice too. Have you checked Craigslist for rentals?

@IcebergMom: @LindsayInNY: Yeah I wouldn't rent in Dorchester. Too far, not much fun stuff going on for a weekend. Also... certain parts are fine, certain parts I wouldn't want to walk home alone at night in, and it would be really hard to tell from a listing which parts are which! Of places you'd have to T in from, anything on the green line would probably be OK (but watch out if the Red Sox are at home, the trains will be super crowded.) There would be walkable stuff to do but it would also be an easy T ride, I think.

@Foodnerd81: Thank you for your post! I guess we don't want to go past 325 a night. Just got a response from a lady in Dorchester area but according to the map it looks kind of far. We are comfortable with taking transit in general. We've lived in Toronto and visited lots of other cities in North America and internationally and have never been too nervous about transit. That being said I'd rather 50% of our activities be walkable. :)

Staying near the common would be great, since there are playgrounds and everything in there and it's right in the middle of everything. Of course, I'm sure the rentals nearby are very expensive because of that! Neighborhoods nearby would be Beacon Hill and Back Bay. The North End would be really convenient too.

How much and how far are you willing to take the T? There are plenty of good spots that are just a T ride away from everything and will probably be cheaper, so it depends on your comfort level with that. Or are there neighborhoods you are seeing good options in? Then it would be easier to say if they are convenient or not.

Hi Boston Bees.

My family (me & dh, mil & fil) and 2 yr old LO are trying to get a 2-3 bedroom rental for Boston near EVERYTHING. We are visiting brother-in-law at MIT but don't necessarily want to be over there. Easier for him to visit us.

Anyhow I'm on homeaway.com and airbnb.com and it's so overwhelming. Where can i stay that is:

-near playgrounds or parks for LO
-near great restaurants
-near the best public transit routes to get us everywhere we want to go because we do not want to rent a car! :)

Thanks!
