He took the commuter rail, which lots of people do happily, but it did add a lot of time onto his day. The thing is that if you're gonna be going in to Longwood or south station, taking a train that comes up from the south means less transfers. The trains that come from the north go in to north station, so it's a little longer and complicated. I'm south west of Boston, near the towns that @catlady: mentioned. In this area the family friendly towns with ok schools that ate still affordable are Canton, Walpole, Dedham and Medfield. I work near Boston Children's and my husband works near Floating Hospital for Children, and we both can commute in via train just fine. We drive in though, since I have parking at work and 2 train tickets really adds up. I think renting in a place like Cambridge, Newton, or Brookline is a good start as you start to get to know the city and its suburbs. They're expensive towns but you can find reasonable rentals. Watertown and Somerville are also great and close and lots of rentals. If you're into the hipster vibe, there are great neighborhoods in Jamaica Plain and Roslindale (both parts of Boston). I would second everything that others have said, and would add that there are some great towns north of the city that are very commuter friendly, kid friendly and budget friendly. Beverly and Ipswich are right on the ocean and have direct rail access into downtown Boston. Danvers, Wakefield and Lynnfield are also great options that could work for you. You'd be able to get into downtown Boston in about an hour from any of these by train. They're definitely a little further out than some of the places other posters have mentioned, but I think you get a little more bang for your buck that way. The good news is that even the "mediocre" school systems are really great compared to many other parts of the country. If you may need to get to Children's, that's in the Longwood area (there are lots of other hospitals in that area as well). The towns closest to there (Brookline, Newton) are $$$, but you could consider towns like Canton, Norwood, or Sharon and take the commuter rail in. In your price range, you could also look at Braintree and Quincy (both on the Red Line), Melrose, or Waltham if you want to be closer to the city. If you want further out, Maynard or Acton are nice (more rural).
