@Tgilbe1: So sorry to hear, but please know as I said a few months ago, that IVF is very successful for those with missing or damaged tubes! Look at my success story and please think positive. :) I'm excited for you! When do you think you can pursue IVF? Let me know if you have any questions or want to talk. :)

Well today was the day of my Lapo- just as the HSG results showed my Fallopian tubes were severely damaged. The only option was to have them removed:( I was sad to hear the news although, after all this time waiting for the Lapo and wondering what the results would be...we can finally move forward with planning for IVF.

@Tgilbe1: That's great news! Often there can be confusion as to whether it really is hydro or not. When I was undergoing IVF and had to see another RE one day for monitoring because mine was out that day, the RE I saw said I had hydrosalpinx and my husband and I were devastated. This was only a few days before my egg retrieval so we were already about $4000 into the procedure since all the injections were mostly used and so pricey. Anyway, my RE called later that night and said he saw what the other RE had written and that I did NOT have hydro, but that the other RE thought the fluid in my tube looked like it. Anyway, just wanted to point out sometimes it is hard to know without really looking at it, so that is great that your OB doesn't think it is now after looking more carefully. Hopefully, you won't have to have the tubes tied or removed now! :)

Well as I anticipated the OB recommended a laparoscopy to take a better look at my falopian tubes. The good news is after she reviewed the HSG results she didn't necessarily think that the falopian tubes have Hydrosalpinx. I'm just glad we have a plan in place to proceed with the laparoscopy, depending on what she finds she may be able to repair the tubes or if the damage is too severe remove them. At least we can determine next steps for conception after the procedure...no date set yet although I'm really just ready to get it done. I'm having a hard time dealing with all the uncertainty- I'll keep everyone posted and thanks for all the support. Blogging about this has really helped me understand and accept these challenges.

@CupQuakeWalk: thank you for your insight:) I am going to see my OB tomorrow to see what she suggests about the hydro situation. The RE suggested that the best option would be to tie or remove my tubes before proceeding with IVF.

I'm assuming my next step is laparoscopy so they can get a good look at my tubes. As you've pointed out I will likely spend money on the laparoscopy and ultimately end up pursuing IVF. Unfortunately, it sounds like I will need to do the laparoscopy regardless to tie or remove my tubes prior to IVF.

I'm just trying to take it one step at a time...hopefully I will have more answers after my apt with the OB tomorrow.

@mopeybuthopey: I'm glad to hear no hydro;) that's good news. It sounds like the procedure wasn't bad either.

I understand it is frustrating seeing everyone else around you getting pregnant, especially when it seems so easy for them. I have heard that stress may cause fertility problems so it's not too far fetched of an idea.

As for me, I'm going to see my OBGYN tomorrow to discuss the hydro situation and see what she recommends. I'm assuming she will suggest laparoscopy, and discuss options regarding either attempting to repair or remove the tubes. I think I've come to terms with the fact that I may need to remove my tubes before proceeding with IVF.

Your laparoscopy results make me hopeful that maybe the HSG results weren't completely accurate. I will definitely stay in touch and let you know how my apt goes tomorrow.

@Tgilbe1: From the research i've done, it seems that repairing blocked tubes is tricky business and has a low rate of success. Further more, because it is most likely HVP related, even when the blockage is removed (if it can be), there will more than likely be scarred tissue there which will result in blockage again. From what i've read on the matter, the scarred tissue can *also* be a reason that doctors may even decline the surgery because it can harm more than do good.
But ultimately, you would need the evaluation of an OB to get a definite answer.

Personally, id skip the heartache and go straight to IVF, as it may be the way you end up going after all is said and done anyways. And keep in mind if you have a limit on how much your insurance will cover, you don;t want to "waste" your funds on blockage removal and then find out it failed or you still aren't pregnant and need IVF anyway.

@Tgilbe1 -- I had my laparoscopy a few weeks ago. It was a piece of cake for me. I was up and on my feet shortly after I woke up, and while I was a little sore, it was nothing too terrible. I do tend to have a high threshold for pain, if that helps, but I hope you will have a similar experience.

Despite what they thought, I do NOT have a hydrosalpinx after all. Both tubes are fine, even though looking at the x-ray from the HSG I so clearly appear to have a hydro. Crazy how wrong it was.

I have a follow up with my RE to discuss next steps in the next few weeks. He wants me to try on my own, but I think I'm going to ask about IUI. They did find mild endo when they were in there. Crazy because I really don't have any symptoms of it other than infertility. Some days I feel like I am just never going to get pregnant. I hate getting this advice, but I do sometimes think if I could just relax and stop thinking about this, maybe it would just happen :| Problem is that is almost impossible... grrr. In the meantime, two of my close friends have had their babies (and yes, they starting trying to get pregnant after me and my hubby!!! and now their babies are here!!!) and keep sending me messages like "We are so in love!!!" etc. I'm excited for them of course but... it's too much sometimes.

Any updates with you?

@Tgilbe1: My RE didn't think my remaining tube needed to be removed, so we left it alone. I think had it been a hydro he would have recommended removing it because my research at that time showed often you should remove them in that case. Is it easier to have them tied or removed? So sorry you are going through this. :( I know the frustration and sadness that comes with the infertility process, but just try to think positive and know that IVF success is great when you have tubal issues since they aren't necessary at all for it. It worked for me and I bet it will work for you!! Let me know if you have any other questions.

@Tgilbe1 -- I'm sorry you got crappy news too. I know how you feel. My surgery is Wednesday -- he is trying to repair it and if it's in bad shape, he'll remove it. I'll let you know what the surgery and recovery are like. I have read that if you have hydros you should get them removed or repaired before proceeding with IVF because they decrease your odds. Your insurance may cover the surgery because technically this is "tubal disease" and not infertility treatment. Sorry you didn't get better news.

I had my consultation with RE to review the results of the HSG. He believes that both tubes have Hydrosalpinx :( He of course thinks IVF would be the best option to achieve pregnancy because even if they are able to open the tubes it is usually very short lived before they become scarred or blocked again. He also pointed out some of the risks of conceiving with the Hydrosalpinx- ecptopic pregnancy and miscarriage. RE also mentioned that in order to avoid complications and to improve probability of conception with IVF, he recommends removing or tying the tubes :(

I'm still processing all of this information ...although I think I'm going to speak with my OBGYN. The RE does not perform laparoscopy so he recommended I speak with an OBGYN about potentially moving forward with a laparoscopy to see if the blockage can be removed or to discuss removing/tying my tubes.

@Tgilbe1 -- I'm actually not sure yet regarding the IVF. I think it will probably depend on why the tube is blocked and what he finds in there. Hopefully nothing too terrible.

I have read the unblocking tubes is just a temporary fix, and the tube seals back up within 3-6 months. Just so disappointing. I hope that IVF may work for me if it comes to that. It's just the doc thinks my tube could be blocked potentially due to endometriosis, and I don't know what that means for my odds with IVF :|

@lindsayinny I don't know if HPV is factor in the tubage blocking...it's the only thing I could think of that may have cussed issues with my Fallopian tubes. It seems it's hard to say what exactly causes it.

@tgilbe1 -turns out I have a hydrosalpinx which is why the doc thinks I'm not conceiving. Because fluids from a hydro can be toxic to an embryo, my best option at this point is lap surgery. The doc will try to fix my tube (he thinks he can), but if it's in worse shape than he expects when he gets in there he will take it out. I am afraid of what he may find since I do not have any of the typical causes of a hydro :/ I just hope nothing really bad. I only have it on one side and my other tube looks fine.

Sounds like your situation is a little different from mine so you may be able to avoid the lap and skip straight to ivf... Or get the hsg repeated -- they can be wrong especially if the blockage is closer to your uterus than your ovary. Keep us posted. Sending you happy thoughts.

Thank you all for this valuable information! I appreciate all of the advice. I will definitely post what I find out from my RE next month. Although it seems so long from now, I feel a little more confident in my options and things I should discuss with the RE. @ mopeybuthopey I hope your consultation goes well and please do let me know how it goes.

As a side question to all of you who have gone through HSG, did you have cramping and bleeding for a few days afterward? I had mine completed on Monday and I'm still bleeding and cramping. The bleeding was heavier the first couple of days, it's lighter today.

@Tgilbe1: I agree with @septca: that you should ask to have a repeat HSG with the RE just to make sure the initial results are accurate before proceeding. I have no experience with blocked tubes but I hope you are able to get some answers at your follow up with the RE. As an upside, if this is the only issue then hopefully you will have a good chance with IVF.

oh man @Tgilbe1 I am going through the EXACT same thing. I found out the news last week -- the nurse called me, told me the doc was going to call, he never did, and basically after almost a week and a half, I am finally getting in for a meeting. So I feel your pain re: a month.

I have researched this and read some OB/GYN textbooks now and I think we have a few options (i) repeat the HSG depending on how confident you are in the results (I'm not so confident in my mine, so I think I may try this); (ii) do a diagnostic lap, which I have now extensively researched. I know they are medical people so no need to be embarrassed, but I am VERY hesitant about this option in light of the success rates of de-blockage (though the closer the blockage to the uterus, the higher your chances of success) and the fact that they do put you in stirrups for the whole procedure (esp if you are doing a lap and dye and I am very self-conscious and have unhealthily high anxiety about the OB/GYN/RE), or (iii) proceed directly to IVF.

I am considering the last one if it is offered to me. I am so tired of being sad and according to the OB/GYN textbooks I read, IVF risks appear to be lower than those associated with lap surgery. IVF risks chiefly include multiples, and I would prefer a singleton, and ovarian hyper stimulation syndrome. Both are scary, but so is laparoscopy in its own way, and based on my research and my current very delicate and sad mental state, IVF seems to be a more attractive choice in light of my circumstances.

Laparoscopy risks include those associated with being under anesthesia longer, bowel perforation, hip pain, etc -- again LOW risk of this happening, but there are still risks. Lap may, however, be covered by your insurance, and it would potentially give you a chance of conceiving au natural, so these are things to consider. And your blockage may be easily treatable, so lap may be a good option. But I'm sure your doc will advise you appropriately.

With all that said, I'm not a doc and haven't gone through a lap or IVF, so I defer 100% to ladies with experience on these. Also, I have a poor prognosis of de-blockage given that mine are apparently closer to my ovaries, so some of this is me trying to convince myself that IVF is the right choice for me.

I will let you know what he says. Best wishes to you.
