Yep we will definitely consider it! My sister used to do this while she was in college so I would probably try to find a local college student.

Sure, we'd consider it if our schedules needed that kind of help. Right now, DH works from home half the time and is a college professor, which means he's off from teaching in the summer and for a month in the winter, which would help with carpooling and shuttling to camps and activities on breaks. I currently work 3 days a week since isn't in school yet, but once our kids are in school, I'm thinking of changing my work hours to working just during school hours 5 days a week. It would be the same hours, just fewer hours each day, and I would be home in the afternoons to help with homework and what not. I think it'd be easier to hire temporary help over the summers instead of finding a nanny that could do afterschool care during the school year and then switch them to full time care in the summer.

My coworker actually hired one of the after-care teachers at her kid's school to be her summer helper. She paid her some lump sum amount for the summer, plus gave her a pre-paid Visa that she reloaded each week for expenses (gas, food, admissions fees, etc), and the helper shuttled her son to and from camps, dance classes, took him hiking, etc. Said it worked out great.

We are actually considering this right now....especially now with 2, the cost is almost the same, BUT, as mentioned above, i'm not sure about the cost of activities etc... and I will want my older LO to do preschool next year, so we'll have to pay for that AND the nanny. So we have a LOT to consider... We're also looking into different daycares, unfortunately the one we're in now isn't going to work for us leading into Kindergarten.

@yerpie110: haha I feel the same way about our nanny.

I'm going to try and hang onto our nanny for as long as possible. R starts "school" in the fall along with his brother, and she's agreed to stay on for (330-6) but I'm trying to figure out a way to get her 20 hours a week with us.

We'll have a full time nanny when I go back to work. It ends up being far cheaper than day care for two and gives us more flexibility.

No, I just don't like having people in my house when I'm not there. I also have decent hours as a teacher and will try to be home at a decent time to help carpool or meet him at the bus stop.

We recently got a nanny for mornings and it's been amazing. I l ave before LO wakes up. The nanny gets him up, fed, dressed and to school with lunch, then she comes back and does his laundry or preps dinner. It's definitely a luxury, but it's actually improving our marriage in the process!

K has been in Daycare since she was 4 mos old and we love it. DD2 will join her in June when I go back to work after having her.

When K is 4...she will move over to the "public" pre-school. To prepare her for Kindergarten there at 5. At that point, her preschool will end at 3pm...we have decided if we can get our current babysitter to agree to 3pm-6pm daily we will hire her.

I LOVE the idea of the girls being home together for a few hours, having a snack, playing and just being with each other. Plus our babysitter is amazing. Not to mention the time saving of not having to pick them up from Daycare will be huge for DH and I who both have stressful jobs.

A old coworker had a nanny for her two school aged kids even though she had a very flexible schedule. She used her heavily on school breaks and over the summers. Her kids were still signed up for camps but it was nice to have someone to drop them off and pick them up. Then hang out with them afterwards since the camps weren't necessarily "9-5" schedules.

I think if we were that's what I would consider. Heavy on the breaks and summer vacation when they're both school aged.

I would definitely consider it...especially when both kids are in elementary school. I don't yet know how we are going to handle the breaks and summer holidays. I think the elementary school has some sort of program, but I don't have any info about it yet.

Well, we have a nanny now, so....yes? Once both girls are in real school, I'm not sure we'll need a nanny since I'm a school librarian and get summers and holidays off, but I would totally consider it.

Yes! That set up was super typical growing up. Alot of kids went to camp. Even during the Summer most kids just needed a nanny for pick up and a the hours before the parents came home.

Maybe not a nanny but we will probably have something like this for afterschool pick-ups, etc. when LO (or perhaps any subsequent LO) gets older. We have a nanny now, but we don't foresee needing her forever. My DH works long hours and often travels or has evening work commitments (and I work too!), and we have no local family, so we will need someone to help at those times should our family's schedule dictate it.

Yup we are definitely considering this once our older LO is school age. I'm hoping to be able to cut back my hours before then, but if not, I think it would make things much better to have someone at home and able to pick up younger LO from daycare earlier so the evening isn't such a rush. We have several universities nearby so thinking a college student would be a good fit.

Our kids are still years away from this but I'm starting to think about it. We're both professors, with flexibility in our schedules. So we' ll be able to cover some of these times. But we'll probably need after school care a few days a week, and a nanny sounds so much nicer for all of us than school programs. And still so much cheaper than our current daycare! Plus we have access to lots of college students to hire :)

I had a summer babysitter when I was a kid. It was really nice to have one person come to our house and be with us every day. She felt like part of our family. Plus, she drove, so we used to go on field trips. Plus I know it was INCREDIBLY cheaper than sending 3 kids to full time day care.

I don't think so.

DS LOVES his afterschool program - they do all kinds of fun stuff and its cheap!

As for summer, another no. If they were home with a nanny I would also have to pay for swimming, activities, etc because I wouldn't want them home all day watching tv - so I think it would cost more $ to have a nanny and pay for extras.

If you have a dual income family, would you consider getting a nanny for your child for after care/before care and school breaks (summer, track out, etc?) I was thinking recently how nice it would be for our lo to be able to come home after school and not have to hang out at school or be bussed somewhere else to wait for us.

If your child will have to use after-care and go to camps during the summer/track-out, would you consider a nanny?
