Thank you so much ladies this is all very helpful!

@Lozza: Quota.... I ditched that idea a long time ago. Quota says 16-24 oz a day. Today LO had 6.5 oz total. For the entire day. I figured I will not drive myself crazy over that...

@MamaG: This is very helpful! Did your ped tell you how much cheese and yogurt does she need if she's not drinking milk?

Our ped also recommended being done with the bottle by 15 months. He also suggested when I called at about 11 months that we could stop formula when we ran out. Daycare actually weaned our LO within 3 days. We were down to 3 bottles per day already and they took away the ones she was getting there (2) so that left us with just the bedtime bottle. Once they got rid of the daytime ones, she didn't even care about the bedtime bottle. We struggle with milk. Some days she will drink enough other days barely touches it. At home we keep a water filled sippy available all day (she likes ice water best). And the ped has recommended we make sure to get dairy in other ways (cheese and yogurt) if she won't drink milk.

I thought I'd have that problem too, LO LOVED her bottle. But right when she turned one I went cold turkey and replaced her bottle of formula with the sippy of milk. The first day was a little iffy, she didn't drink too much out of it and I was pretty worried that she wasn't going to be getting enough calcium. But by the second day she scarfed all of the milk down with every meal :)

Our pediatrician told us that she'd like our DS to be off the bottle by 15 months old. We started introducing the sippy cup (Playtex straw sippy) after his first birthday, but he would only drink water from it. Just like you, we were afraid that he'd start to lose weight since he's on the skinny side. One weekend when he was almost 18 months old, we decided to stop the bottle cold turkey and only give him sippy cups. The first day, he drank more water than milk. By the second day, he eventually gave up and started drinking milk from a straw sippy.

I was very happy to not have to wash bottles anymore.

We worried about this and then decided we didn't care if it took DS a few extra months to get off the bottle. We started introducing a few different types of cups for water, but if we were at all worried about making sure DS stayed hydrated, or wanting to make sure he got his formula/milk quota for the day in, we'd give him a bottle. Our daycare provider said she didn't think it was at all a big deal to let kids go a few extra months on the bottle. I think we stopped using bottles entirely around 15 months, and that happened pretty naturally and easily- we found a few sippy cups that LO liked (mostly ones with the rubbery tips, as opposed to hard plastic, so they kind of felt more like bottles anyways) and we just gradually replaced bottles entirely.
Especially if you are worried about his intake of liquids, I wouldn't worry about going past a year on bottles.

@irene: 13 months & cows milk but he'll eat anything! yesterday he had yogurt, bananas, applesauce, rice with spinach & tomato, pizza, a granola bar and grean beans.
ETA - he was breastfed until 11 months but at the end I had to force that on him, too.

I forgot to add, FWIW my niece is going to be 3 in April and still gets a bottle before bed at night... I'm not saying this is the best idea in the world, but it surely isn't ruining her either.

@rachiecakes: how old is your LO? Milk do you mean cow's milk or formula?

my LO eats too but he'd only eat a good amount if I feed him, usually at dinner. Since we are starting daycare we have to train him to self feed, he doesn't eat that much (ie. nibbling 1.5-2 oz of food total, for lunch!)! On top of that, he won't drink his bottle or much of anything. I don't know what his deal is...

I second the straw cup, mine really likes his. Teaching him was easy, I trapped the liquid in the straw and held the other end with my finger while offering it to him. He had to suck on it to get the liquid (we've been doing that at restaurants the whole time). After a little bit, the straw cup came naturally.

We still use a bottle daily at 12 months- they don't turn into a pumpkin at a year! We make an effort to have him drink from other things daily, but the bottle gets things done. With yours on the lower end of the weight spectrum, I would not just stop the bottle at one year. Recommendations aren't best for all at one specific time.

I don't have a toddler yet but I just wanted to say that I don't think it's a huge deal that a one year old is still drinking from a bottle and that you don't need to set a firm deadline to wean him from the bottle.

I also agree with others to continue trying different sippy and straw cups and offering them throughout the day. My LO is great with any type of sippy or straw cup but he's used to drinking water from them. Whenever I put something different in a cup he gets really confused!

@irene: my DS is the same! he hates to drink. I have to force him. I still give him milk in a bottle because it's the only way he'll drink it. He'll take water and sometimes juice in a sippy with a straw but hates his milk in a sippy. He just throws it.
He does love to eat! (though he's in the 25th percentile for weight)

@irene: ugh, that zoli bot is both a blessing and a curse! It is such a pain to clean, but so easy for the LOs to use. Wish they could twea,k it and make it better.

@T-Mom: @autumnlove: Thanks for sharing!! Yes I tried sippy and straw... he is doing better with straw as well. I think he knows how to drink but he doesn't like to drink. I haven't tried giving him formula via a straw cup though (he did drink formula from a sippy once... for 2 oz). It's just that nowadays I have to force him to take the bottle (ie. drink something) it makes me very reluctant to switch to a cup because then I really wouldn't know if he doesn't want the cup, or doesn't want the formula.

The thing about the zoli that makes me mad is, the liquid inside it would overflow! It is OK if it were just water, but when it were milk or juice or something else that's not cool. Especially when LO like to swing and bang it on the table instead of drinking. Argh!

LO is 1 and bottle weaned but I gave her a bottle a few times last week when she was sick and refusing solids.

I started with a formula sippy around 11.5 months and it made her very angry and confused. I kept offering it and she drank more each time. After 3 days, she was drinking from a cup regularly! I tried two cups, the ThinkBaby Straw and the Zoli and she has an easier time with the Zoli.

Good luck Irene!

Have you tried a straw cup? DS really preferred a straw cup for a while, and then he successfully transitioned to the sippy. He still gets one bottle in the AM (16 months), I'm a little ashamed to say. He probably wouldn't even miss it, but he gets up so early and DH just makes him a bottle of milk to occupy him so I can get 5 more minutes of shut eye. I wouldn't stress too too much about it. Just work on gradually reducing either the amount, or cutting out one bottle. DS started pushing his evening bottle away at around 14 months so we cut it out.

I know the docs and all does not recommend giving a bottle to a child who is 1 year old or older, but I wonder how many of you are still giving a bottle to your 1+ year old toddler? If no, do you have tips and tricks of how to wean your LO off of the bottle?

I am struggling because LO is 11.5 months and he doesn't drink a lot of liquids from a sippy. Recently it has become very impossible to give him a bottle of formula during the day, so he only drinks maybe 3+ oz of formula in the morning (first wake) and 2-4.5 oz of formula before bedtime. And maybe 2 oz somewhere along the day, if we are lucky. I feel that if I take away the bottle he'd be drinking nothing for the entire day!

I just am dreading the thought that I have to take away the bottle by the time he turns 1! He'd usually wake up and cry and I'd shove a bottle in his mouth. Now if I give him a sippy I think he'd cry even more. I don't know. And considering he has always have problems with eating/drinking I worry about his growth. While he's still on the chart he is definitely the smaller size. (20% in weight, and I think he didn't grow much taller for the past 2+ months).

If you have been able to wean your LO off the bottle completely by age 1, do you have tips and tricks to share??
