@Meridian: Just a thought--my LO had jaw issues at birth (which, along with her tongue and lip ties really made breastfeeding almost impossible--she just couldn't open her mouth wide enough to latch onto my gigantic breasts)--but I didn't realize until I took her to a cranial sacral therapist that she was also having trouble latching to the bottle. She was making a clicking sound and not latching on "deep" enough on the bottle too--the therapist pointed it out. LO was having to work really hard to even get milk from a bottle.

The therapy sessions helped, but it also helped when I officially gave up on BFing and resigned myself to EPing when she was 3 months--because then I bought the skinnier Dr. Brown bottles and LO had an easier time latching on. Before we were using "breasfeeding friendly" bottles with much wider tops.

Have you had your LOs latch onto the bottle evaluated?

@Pumpkin Pie: yah, that sounds like my guy! 10-15 mins per ounce, arghhh... Seems like he's spending more calories eating than he's taking in!

@Tanjowen: glad to hear they get faster! 8 oz in 20 mins sounds super fast at this point, haha.

My LO was a slow eater until about 10 weeks. Took like 40 mins to finish 3 ounces. Then she started eating well, then she started eating less, and now she is back to eating well. I say give it a little more time and see if your LO develops.

My LO was the slowest eater ever. Bottles took 45+ minutes, and my pediatrician called him a "nip and napper" when he was born because he fell asleep in any style of eating (breast or bottle).

It does get better because they quit falling asleep while eating, but mine still is sloooow at the bottle - 20 minutes at 12 months to finish 8 oz. I just learned to settle in with my phone or a good TV show.

My LO is two now, but he was very slow. What worked best for us was thickening the feed a little but with a higher flow nipple. I mixed breast milk and enfamil ER.

Everyone days not to feed for more than half an hour, but we def did...just don't push it to the point that LO develops an aversion to feeding...

I EP and we bottle feed, and LO is seriously the slowest eater! On average, it can take LO (11 weeks/6 weeks adjusted) about 40-45 mins to finish 3 measly ounces! We're lucky if he finishes at all, as he'll usually fall asleep to his bottle :bummed:

We're still using the newborn flow nipples. We have tried the next level up, but that seems to make him gag. Anyone else have a slow eater and can commiserate?
