We had this issue. Had to switch to syringe feeding and no bottles at all for a few weeks. It was grueling but worth it. Once he grew out of the sleepiness and grew in size he was finally able to latch well. Then we slowly added bottles back in. Then once he was really, really efficient I was able to cut those out altogether and just BF.

I agree that lots of skin on skin contact would be beneficial. The head of my BF support group says a "nurse in" is always helpful - essentially lay in bed with your baby skin-to-skin for 1-2 days (easier said, I know) but the point being, just keeping your baby on your chest like that should encourage the latch.

Slow flow nipples and paced feedings will also help. And try different positions. Laid back breastfeeding may make it easier, or side lying.

Hang in there, the two of you will figure it out.

Lots of skin to skin time. Let her find her way as often as she would like.

Make sure you're using the slowest flow nipple and pace the feeding (stop every half ounce for a burp break to make sure she's not guzzling).

DD wasn't that young, but after we finally got her to take a bottle, she def had bottle preference! It really sucked, but I just had to keep offering first, then feed bottle while I pump, and next feeding just offer first again... It did eventually go away.

@reverie: hugs mama! This is slightly different but due to tongue tie and latch issues I basically exclusively pumped the first 6 weeks with LO2 and then was able to transition him back to exclusively nursing.

5 days is so early that I wouldn't freak out too much about creating a preference you can't reverse. I tried to look at pumping as a short term solution that bought me time while we tried to figure out the latch issues. I had read some things about improvements around 6-8 weeks so I decided at that point I would work on getting him back to nursing and then reevaluate. It worked and lactation was a huge help. Have you spoken with an IBCLC?

No matter what the important thing is a healthy and sane mama and baby so try not to stress too much!!

Consider using a supplemental nursing system to give her the pumped milk for a while?

Are you paced feeding and using a really slow nipple? You could also try an SNS system so that you're wee one is still suckling at the breast and stimulating your supply. Good luck!

A friend of mine went through this, her daughter was older I believe like 4 months! I would just continue to offer, maybe give the bottle and hold her in a nursing position and switch to breast?!
Hopefully it all works out for you!

I had trouble breast feeding my son and stopped at 16 weeks due to lack of output in the pump (pumping 2 hours a day while at work and only making 1/6th of what he was eating).

My baby girl is 5 days old. At her follow up she had brick dust in her diaper and her weight was really down. The MD suggested that I pump after each feed for 15 minutes and feed her that or give formula supplementation. She is a really, really sleepy newborn and honestly only wants to nurse 3-5 minutes and then full on passes out. The lactation consultant told me to try and make it to a solid ten minutes by constantly agitating her and then follow up with the pumping.

Anyway, all those bottles of formula and pumped milk and girlfriend is developing a strong preference. We just fought for 25 minutes and she refused to latch. Has anyone been able to reverse this? After we gave up with breast feeding she happily took a bottle while I pumped. I pumped out 1 ounce while she ate slightly more than 1.5. I guess if a baby is more efficient than a pump she would have been satiated with me + pumping, but no dice.

I don't think I could ever maintain an exclusive pumping relationship due to my past low output and my current work situation so there will always be formula in my life. Just looking on tips to try and get her to nurse again, I didn't want to deal with such issues so long before leave was over!
