Clean, disinfect, and sterilize.
Clean with soap and scrubbing to remove surface matter. Disinfect with bleach, or vinegar if you want a greener option. Sterilize with steam and heat (boiling water or sanitize setting in your dishwasher).

I am not a scientist, so I probably shouldn't chime in, but I find plastic retains smells and I wouldn't be comfortable unless I was able to do a bleach rinse, so I would buy new bottles.

Molecular biologist here, but isn't this more Microbiology?

I'd be good with a nice, hot soapy wash and a boil and/or steam sterilization.

@Blustriped Bee: I kinda liked finding contamination in my cell culture bottles the one time it happened. It set back the project, but I thought it was fun to identify what the weird stuff was!

Now, if you have any burning questions about gene expression in the zea mays genome, I can really help you out.

Good scrub with some antibacterial soap and sterilize in boiling water for 15 minutes would be good in my biologist's notebook. Since I'm fairly a big germaphobe, I would probably repeat that process 2 to 3 times. Just to be sure.

Funny story for biologists out there! Work related. Just found out last night that I have contamination in my media bottles for cell culture. Fun! :/

OK maybe I'm being slightly dramatic with my call for biologists, but I'm a very anxious mama in general.

So I breastfeed on demand, and it's rare that I pump. (I hate it!)
Three weeks ago (maybe even a month?) I pumped three bottles to take to my in-laws. There was a barbeque and I didn't want to worry about nursing in front of so many people.
Cut to today: I was going to pump some bottles for tomorrow and was wondering where two of them went. They were still in the mini bottle cooler I'd taken to the in-laws! There was a little bit of milk in each and smelled really sour (obviously). There was a little bit of mold in the cap too.
I'm inclined to just toss the two bottles and buy a new set off amazon. Is that too extreme? I"m so paranoid that mold microbes (lol i'm making that term up) will stay even after a good scrub and sterilization. Is that possible? I realize I'm super paranoid here but I admit that I really AM overly anxious with everything regarding her safety!
