Ours told us no later than 18 months because that is when they start to get attached (emotional bond) to items. It would be even harder to take away the bottle after that.

We did a slow transition and what helped was getting a sippy cup with a soft silicone top that resembled a nipple (like this one http://www.amazon.com/NUK-Learner-Silicone-Bundle-Ounce/dp/B00GEF7LMA/ref=sr_1_3?s=baby-products&ie=UTF8&qid=1393443360&sr=1-3&keywords=nuk+sippy+cups).

Once we got him use to that we moved to the kind he had to bite and suck. Eventually we were able to move to using just straw cups. Good luck with the transition!

If she takes a sippy fine at daycare and with grandma and not with you or DH, is it because she knows you will give in? Have you tried using other types of sippys to see if there is a better one she likes?

For us, DS would drink water out of his straw cup no problem but wouldn't drink milk out of it for a long time. Since I was home for 5 days or so around Thanksgiving, we did cold turkey as I don't think he would work doing it gradually. We never gave water in a bottle so not sure how that will change things for you. Our ped wanted him done with bottles by 15 mo and I think it also has to do with the teeth or formation of the palate.

Good luck! It's not always easy.

The answer to your question :D

http://www.phrases.org.uk/meanings/cold-turkey.html
http://mentalfloss.com/article/12798/why-abruptly-quitting-something-called-going-cold-turkey

Summary - (aka my words)

In the US the turkey was all over when early European colonists came and because the center piece for thanksgiving.

So a phrase developed
talking turkey = mean getting down to business (from Americans trading with native Americans)
talking cold turkey = speaking frank
cold turkey = abandoning something with a no-nonsense approach.

Some say because of the texture of a drug addicts skin reminds people of cold turkey it's almost exclusively used for drug addiction... aka quitting cold turkey.

Such a complex reason! :)

-------------------------------------------------------------

Our ped recommended the same thing to stop by 18 months / 2 years old.

I think every kid is different though and I don't think you are "ignoring" your ped by not following through with this because you are definitely trying! :)

For us, we found sippy cups with soft mouth pieces. It feels like almost cheating because it's like a bottle but with easier flow (instead of sucking, LO kind of does this bite and suck).

We use Nuby no spill sports sippers for night only which is the only time he drinks milk now. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00138YI7Y/

The reason behind not using bottles is not about the bottles themselves I believe. I think it's about the milk. Milk is very filling and causes constipation which is not a good for a baby you are trying to transition into normal food. Aka if they are full from milk they aren't going to eat anything else.

For the bottle I believe that there is a teeth issue? It might be different for everyone but my mom was terrible and let my brother have a bottle till he was 4 and his teeth are fine... never needed braces but that could be because he as good strong straight teeth that tends to run in our family.

Anyways this is just from our experience :D Everyone is different!

First of all, where did that weird phrase 'cold turkey' come from?!

L's pediatrician wants her bottle weaned by 15 months. Fair enough. She's had a bottle exclusively since she was 4 weeks old and now will NOT give it up at home. She'll take a sippy cup at daycare and at Grandma's house, but will cry non-stop at home until DH or I give in. I have tried 3 different times on weekends to quit cold turkey, but she just screams at me all morning, and then I NEED her to take a nap, so I give in. I am convinced she would scream and cry all day if I refused her a bottle.

For water at home, she'll play with sippy cups and get a sip or two, but will really only drink water from a bottle.

I have heard plenty of success stories about just refusing the bottle, and when the child gets thirsty enough they'll give in and take the cup and then that's it. That is NOT my baby.

Anyone else have any other methods? Is there an actual reason she *needs* to give up the bottle, or should I just ignore the ped and let her continue with her bottle until she's ready...
