We're trying to figure this out too. DS currently drinks water from a straw but when we tried giving him milk in the same container he freaked out. Right now he only has two bottles a day - one before his nap and one before bedtime. His 18-month appt is coming up and I think his ped will ask if he's bottle weaned. I'm thinking about getting this to help with DS' bottle weaning transition.

I've been doing it super duper gradual b/c my youngest doesn't take change too easily like my oldest. He's 2.5 and still on one bottle a day only b/c I just decided to cut his night time bottle last week just because he needs to be out of bottles; but he's not drinking enough milk now b/c he doesn't want to drink milk with his meals like his older brother does. Some days he'll drink it find but most he'll refuse and want water. So it's one bottle of day... for now... and whatever he'll take with his meals.

Cold turkey to a sippy. It took a few days of her drinking less than usual so we gave lots of fruit and purees to try and make up for it.

I think @ 15 months, LO1 we transitioned her, starting with daytime bottles, every couple of days we'd take 1 bottle out, the last bottle to go was the morning bottle. she did protest at first, lots of crying. we had a plethora of sippy and straw cups, but the one she seemed to take the best is those use and toss sippy cups.

@1 year, LO2 saw LO1 drinking out of a cup so would take LO1 cups and drink out of hers, I guess she just wanted to keep up with big sister so we figured she was ready, so we just went cold turkey on her and she was fine.

@lawbee11: Peer pressure worked for us in regards to daycare. That's how they broke her within 2 days. None of the other kids had bottles. I actually count my blessings with the daycare staff as I was fearful of the bottle to cup transition but they pretty much just made it happen with our approval.

Another perspective on @Mrs. Jump Rope: suggestion, we used the same as daycare (which was a hard spout) just for the sake of consistency. I can see how both perspectives have their advantages.

They were these cups. I got them at target.

The only thing I didn't like is that they leaked. I dealt with it though because it really did help her get completely off the bottle, and after a few months she was ready for a different cup.

She would chew on the soft spout too, which made them leak even worse. I had to buy a few new sets, but it was worth it. I couldn't believe how attached to her bottle she was!

DS just started kind of accepting cold WCM in a bottle after trying for a couple months, but they're still in a bottle. He also doesn't drink as much compared to when we warm it up. I'm hoping to transition him to a straw cup soon. Trying to avoid the sippy if possible.

@Applesandbananas: She usually gets 3-4 bottles/day. During the week I leave for work before she wakes up, so she gets 1 from DH before dropoff then 2 or 3 while at daycare, and I nurse her before bed. Ours is giving us a few weeks to transition her, but then they're supposed to be gone completely.

@lawbee11: how often is LO getting bottles? Our daycare flat out refused to give any bottles in the toddler room and daycare was the only time he got them since I nursed at home and had always just given sippies at mealtimes. I think he was hesitant, at first, to drink a whole lot out of the sippies at daycare but he just nursed extra at home until he figured it out. Daycare didn't act like he struggled a ton, just said that he preferred throwing them over drinking from them, but he figured it out pretty quickly.

@Mrs. Jump Rope: M is really stubborn. She went on a bottle strike for 3 months when she was younger. So it took us 3 months to get her to take it in the first place and now we can't get her off of it!

@skipper2010: I'm still nursing in the morning and before bed which I don't have a problem continuing to do, but she's supposed to be exclusively on sippy or straw cups at daycare, so we've got some work to do!

@My Only Sunshine: She's 12.5 months old. She will also occasionally drink water from a straw cup, but yesterday I put milk in the straw cup and she took a sip and freaked out. The ped recommended doing it over a long weekend, so that's how we'll be spending our Labor Day weekend :bummed:

Why do you really have to wean M from the bottle? She's just over a year, right? I don't think there's a huge rush, is there something I'm missing?
We still do bottles in the am/pm and I'm not worried about it (and neither is my ped!)...just another perspective to maybe put less pressure on yourself and not feel like it has to happen immediately!

@lawbee11: How old is your LO? I have an 11.5 month old so I'm following this thread.

Right now my daughter only drinks bottles of formula with a very occasional sip from a straw cup of water. I've been stalling figuring out a plan to wean her because it seems like such a hassle.

We're taking a long weekend for Labor Day and I'm thinking of starting the transition then. I think we're going to try weaning one bottle to sippy at a time. She's already self-weaning from her nighttime bottle in the last week or so, which is a surprise. I was sure that'd be the last to go but she's been drinking 1 ounce and then just snuggling up with us. She seems to be making up for those lost 5 ounces by eating more solids in the morning.

We went cold turkey at 18 months. He was drinking water from straw cups tho. We offered him warmed milk in a soft spout sippy cup. He refused it at first but after about 2 weeks, he started drinking milk from the sippy cup.

@lawbee11: Totally feel you on that! I really hope DS2 isn't so picky and that all the freaking money I blew on the ones L refuses to use isn't a total waste. I only had a few of those and just washed them constantly - once we made the transition it got easier to get him to accept some of the other cups, but he still won't touch anything with a straw or a really hard spout. And then there's a few others he likes that I hate because of leaks and...ugh. There's just too many sippy cups out there!

It was more cold turkey, but we bottle weaned at a year. We had reduced to three bottles/day due to solids. When we started our new daycare at a year they didn't really support bottles at her age so within 2 days all daytime bottles were gone and we removed the night time bottle on a Friday.

ETA: We didn't provide WCM in the bottle except during the last week as a transition.

He definitely drank less milk at first and I was a bit worried, but it only took about 3 days for him to realize we weren't going to just cave and give him a bottle later, and he started taking the sippy cup. We tried slow and steady first but it didn't work - he would just fling the sippy cup and hold out for a bottle, and after several weeks we had made zero progress.

My LO didn't get straw cups, for the initial transition we used these Nuk sippy cups since the material is similar to a bottle. For the first week or so I had to still hold him the same way as when I fed him a bottle, and I would take his hand and make him 'help' by having at least one hand on one of the handles. But within a week, maybe a week and a half, he was doing it all on his own and it made life much easier!

@Smurfette: She still doesn't seem to really "get" many of her sippy/straw cups (though it may just be that she wants the bottle). Hopefully she figures it out quickly!

@MUI831: What kind of cheese did you give? Cubes? I tried giving LO shredded cheese and she wasn't a fan.

We had to do it cold turkey b/c DS would have just waited for the bottle. He would drink water out of the straw cup no problem but fought the milk. It took time but eventually he started drinking the milk out of the straw up. We just fed him a lot of yogurt and cheese to make sure he got enough calcium for awhile.

R dropped her afternoon bottles at 11.5 months so I do think that helped us. Then a couple days after her 1st bday, we went cold turkey. Just gave her breakfast when she woke up and no bottle.

There were a couple weeks that she wasn't drinking much and I was worried about her not drinking enough. We have pediatlye a couple times to just make sure. She also moved to the toddler room, so she had a lot going on. But it was switching to a sippy verses a straw cup that helped her finally drink more. She could sit and drink the sippy like a bottle if she wanted.
