@MUI831: thanks for updating! Today I tried something I never thought I would do – added chocolate syrup to the milk in the straw cup. She did drinks some of it. But I agree it's just freaking me out that she's going from 24 ounces of milk a day to pretty much nothing.

Ok, I"m back to report how things went. We started on Weds morning. It generally went pretty well.

I decided to go with straw cups as I've ready how they're better for speech development. I started offering him a cup of milk when he woke up and he wasn't happy. And then I just kept offering it to him. I then had the same type of cup but a different color and let him see me put water in it. I would always offer him the milk first and then the water. I think sometimes he would think he was getting water and then get upset it was milk but he was drinking water. I was worried he would be dehydrated.

In the mornings, I would give him yogurt from one of the disposable pouches and he would ask for more. I continued to offer him cheese with his meals as well. Only on the first night did he wake up. He drank milk from the straw cup and went right back to sleep.

We eventually broke down and gave him a bottle on Sunday morning as he started to get sick over the weekend and we were really worried about dehydration. We also found a small stash of frozen BM so we gave him about 4 oz before he went to bed that night.

Monday was his first day at daycare and they said he drank about 5 oz throughout the day. He also took a few sips before he went to bed. This morning he woke and was no a happy guy. He kept pushing the milk away but then after I dressed him, he asked for it and took a few sips.

I think it just takes some time for him to get used to the idea that this is how he's going to get milk from now on. I am going to continue to offer him the milk as he is starting to drink more and more every day. It's just strange for me to see him go from about 20 oz of milk a day to only 4 or 5. I think he'll catch on soon.

Okay, I'm having the same problem. Will drink milk from a bottle or water from a sippy. When I put milk in a sippy, she spits it out and acts like I'm crazy. I'm wondering how long I should keep offering her milk in a sippy if she keeps pushing it away? Keep trying? Sigh...

@MUI831: you can do it! My lo caught on pretty quick to the sippies. We did have some transition time using both but when she got sick, we just went cold turkey.

We started today. He was not happy when I gave him the straw cup when he woke up. But he's been eating a lot of yogurt and cheese so at least I know he's getting his calcium!

The battle of wills begins!

It may take a little time for him to adjust. I quit the bottles cold turkey with DS and offered him just a sippy cup. At first, he barely drank any milk, but I figured he just needed time to forget about the bottles. After a couple weeks, he started drinking more. Than after about a month and a half he drinks about 15-24 ounces a day. I also noticed he preferred 2% at first. I mixed it with whole milk for a while and now he's ok with just whole milk.

I offered a sippy of water and sippy of milk at meals, and he slowly started to take milk from the sippy. i continued to give a bottle in the morning and bedtime until he accepted the sippy with meals. after a couple days, i tried a milk sippy in the morning and he was fine with it. still on the bottle at bedtime, but that's more me than him ;)

Since I have a few days off for Thanksgiving, I have decided that it's time to go through the process of bottle weaning DS. I had hoped to maybe do it gradually but it's clear that it needs to be cold turkey.

If you weaned your LO off of the bottle cold turkey and went straight to the sippy cup or straw cup, what advice would you give me?

I have a bunch of different sippys and cups to try with him that we've used for water over the past months. He doesn't seem to have a preference for any of them and uses them all equally well. The issue is that he associates them with water. If I give him a sippy of milk, he'll take a drink, look at me, spit it out and ask for a bottle. If you were to give him water in that same cup, he would drink it down.

This might just be a very long weekend. . .
