I've been using Comtomos since week 1 with my 2-month old and they're great. I've had no issues with bottle preference or nipple confusion so far. I just had to exchange their slow flow nipple with a medium flow one, though, since slow was way too slow for our baby. It took her 1 hr to finish a bottle and she would fall asleep. She now takes 10-15 minutes to finish with medium flow now. I also use Avent naturals that we were gifted and feel like their slowest flow is equivalent to Comotomo's medium. There's so much variation in the marketing that it's been trial and error for us to get something that works.

We used an Avent bottle and some free formula sample kit bottles for pumped milk for the first couple of months. Then we tried 2-3 bottle brands (Joovy, Tommy Tippee. and one other which I forgot). The only one that didn't leak regularly was the Joovy Boob so I bought several and we used them for pumped milk until he was 9.5mo old.

He mostly drank water from a sippy cup, and when he started on WCM at 10mo he refused it from a bottle but liked it from a sippy cup. So that was the end of the bottles since I had stopped pumping.

In hindsight I think I worried about what kind of bottle to use a lot more than I should have.

@Mrs. Microscope: Yeah...I can't imagine any benefit to sterile rather than clean bottles.

@LBee: Seeing how many different bottles there are, 5 sounds like you did a great job at guessing!

On friend recommendations, I registered for Tommy Tippee bottles, and I have already been gifted several Avent Naturals. I also registered for the Tommy Tippee Warmer, as it will work with ANY bottle you end up with (Dr. Browns, for example, is too narrow for the short, squat bottles made by other companies). All of my friend's babies liked either the Tommy Tippee or Avent Natural bottles best. Fingers crossed our baby will too!

We started with Avent Natural then he went on a bottle strike. We tried EVERYTHING and after scouring the boards, the only one that worked was the Joovy Boob. They are fairly expensive, but he loves them and I'm a sucker.

We use plastic - daycare won't allow glass.

We introduced the bottle at 3 weeks - he never had problems going back and forth.

Every baby is different. We tried avent, medela, nuk and gerber. The only one she took was the gerber first essentials (super cheap - win!!) instead of going with the ones sold as "best" for breastfeeding, I would start with one that seems most like your breast/nipple shape and size. I have tiny boobs so she wasn't catching on to the wide neck bottles that seem to be advertised as most like the breast. Buy a single bottle in a few different types and start there. It might take a few weeks to teach baby, so don't get frustrated or give up. It was helpful for us to nurse for a bit first, then sneak the bottle in (warmed the nipple up first) then nurse some more after as a "reward". I introduced bottle around 8-9 weeks and it took a few weeks for her to "get it". We only tried once a day though, I didn't want to fight it and make it stressful. She got bottles t daycare and nursed when we were together - no issues going back and forth. Still nursing at 14.5 months!

DS is 15 months and we are just now stopping bottles. We used Dr. Browns for Colic/Reflux. Never tried any other brand. They worked wonderfully and he has switched back and forth between breast and bottle since he was 2 weeks old. We got plastic since our daycare does not allow glass. I highly suggest introducing a bottle early. I personally believe nipple confusion is bunk. I also never changed him from the slow flow nipple since I kind of have slow flowing boobs so I felt like that helped with our success.

When DD was first born, she took those soft nipples that came with supplement formula 2-3 times. Then we used Medela very sparingly (as not to cause nipple confusion) and she didn't have an issue until she was close to 3 mo! We switched to Avent Natural b/c I had a sample. We never bought anything else b/c for her it wasn't about the bottle... So now we still use Avent Natural.

We've been fine with the Dr Browns. We used a preemie nipple for a while with daycare before we introduced solids, since she drank so fast and then cried. Now at 8 months we're back to the size 1 nipple to make sure she finishes her bottles.

I heard so many recommendations for the Tommee Tippee bottles, but the way they are shaped there was always a quarter ounce of milk or so that got stuck in the curves - I hate wasting milk!

@FliegepilzHut: I have not had a baby yet so can't comment on my own child, but would like to be able to use bottles and pump when I do and I will buy glass just because I don't want to heat and reheat plastic. I did work at an infant program at a daycare for a few months where we had Avent bottles and a generic bottles both in plastic. We had fast, medium, slow flow nipples and used them based on baby's age/feeding habits (they were labelled with numbers 1-3 I believe). There were mums who came in and breastfed sometimes during the day if their schedule allowed or before they left their baby there and any other time during the day we used bottles and all the babies there got used to them and we had no problems. We had 1 month old-15 months old.

Everyone's suggestions about starting early seem good and maybe try a small number of different types to see what your baby prefers, but I would buy one at a time and give each a good few time usage try. Also, if you know what your work schedule is going to be like and when your baby will be at daycare, then use the bottles at the time your baby will be at daycare and have bottles and then breastfeed at times when you will breastfeed so you guys can be on a schedule. Having your hubby feed baby from a bottle is also a good idea so that baby gets used to someone other than you feeding.

We used the lansinoh momma bottles for both my kids. My first hated bottles and that was the least offensive one to her. Start early. I think nipple confusion is mostly untrue. We started at 1 week with my second and she takes a bottle very easily. We started at 5 weeks with my first and she vastly preferred breastfeeding. She wouldn't takw a bottle from weeks 6 to 16, until i went back to work and she was starving. She never got used to them and would only take them from my mom. Start early!!

We use the regular Tommee Tippee bottles, which I love because they are very close to breast shape and have only 3 parts (bottle, collar, nipple). Daycare will only take plastic, so that's what we use. Plus, DD likes to wave things in the air, and sometimes conks herself pretty hard on the head, so I worry about that with the heavier glass bottles too. We started those around 4 weeks 1x day, and she has been successfully going between breast and bottle since then. She's 6 mos now and we're still using the slowest flow nipples.

She had no issues taking those because the nipples are shaped like the breast. Dd2 is 6 months now and those are the only bottles she will take.

@FliegepilzHut: I always suggest to get 1-3 variety (standard base, wide mouth and maybe one special vent) to have on hand. Just cheap basic options. See how baby does with those and then buy more later. My daughter was ok with the $1 Ferber bottles so thankfully that's what we used. My son was very picky and had to use the MAM wide base with a flat short nipple and air vent base. These bottles are like $8 each and have 5 parts to wash. Ugh.

For breast milk always use the slow flow. They will most likely always stay on the slowest flow.

@marionberry: there are glass Avent Natural bottles! I didn't see any in stores but I bought ours on Amazon.
They're a bit more expensive but not too bad, we just didn't get as many as we might have otherwise and dealt with washing them more often.

@FliegepilzHut: I strongly preferred glass to plastic because I don't like the idea of plastic being repeatedly heated and cooled. Our daycare was fine with glass so there was really no reason not to use them. I never had a single bottle break, even though I dropped a couple. They're made of a special type of glass that doesn't shatter even if it breaks. My DD would take pretty much any type of bottle but DH and I liked the Avent Natural ones because they're so much simpler than most of the options out there -- just bottle, collar, and nipple. No fiddly little extra bits. We did get one or two of a few different kinds to try initially, but switched to using the Avents exclusively once we knew DD liked them.

I definitely agree with starting a bottle early. We started giving her a few bottles a week when she was 3 weeks old and never had any nipple confusion or refusals either way (except a brief nursing strike around 4 months that lasted a little less than a week). This was our pediatrician's recommendation since she knew I'd be going back to work at 13 weeks, she said in her experience around 3 weeks is the optimal time to start bottles. Also, don't get lazy thinking the baby is fine with bottles and stop giving them, because that can lead to refusal when the time comes to go back to work! One thing that worked well for us was that I'd pump before I went to bed and leave the milk for DH, and he'd take the first wake-up. That way, DD got a bottle regularly and I got a bit more sleep!

We used Avent Natural and had zero issues. It was the only brand we tried. I started giving her a bottle around 6 weeks, maybe earlier...didn't have any issues with nipple confusion.
