We bottle weaned after we made the transition to milk. Then she would just drink milk in a straw or open cup.

My son LOVED his bottles and he would get his milk in one when he woke up and after daycare until He was 2.5 (oops!!) we didn't do milk before bed per the pediatrician.... he loved bottles, it was his comfort, we took it away by "sending the bottles to the babies who needed them" and he was totally OK with it at that point. The initial reason we stuck with it was because he would only drink milk out of it and I wanted him to get the extra calories. We did switch to cows milk at 1 though, I stopped nursing at 10 months because I dried up and did formula for 2 months.

Well...my almost-3-yo still has a daily bottle. At first our ped was like, "Noooo cavities!" But we were like, "I don't understand because we still brush his teeth afterwards. We just do bath, bottle, brush teeth, bed." And she was like, "Oh nevermind that's fine." I think the issue is having the sugar from the milk/formula sit there all night, but as long as that's not the case you're all good.

@twodoghouse: I think digestive issues and calories are more important than bottle weaning. We actually let our kid have a bedtime bottle til two although by the end it was water I think. As far as the rest of them they were gone by the first month after she turned one (I think) but we had no digestive or weight gain issues, so I don't think its a great basis for comparison.

LO was still on 3 8-oz. bottles/day at 1. Over the next 6 months, we slowly cut one at a time. The last one to be cut was his bedtime bottle, and he cut it himself when he developed a double ear infection and it hurt for him to take the bottle.

@twodoghouse: I think the transition to solids is one of the most stressful parenting changes. It's just so different even life-style wise. My son is 2.5 now (still 1st percentile), but everyone comments on how much he eats now. When he started solids, it was a struggle and I fought for every bite. I bet your kids will start making the change more quickly from now on. One thing that helped me was limiting formula/milk to morning and evening (and I think I still did before nap for awhile). It ended up just being 12-18 oz depending on the day, but his solids kept increasing.

I tried SO MANY different cups and the hard spout take and toss worked best. The soft spout ones are basically a bottle that's harder to suck out of!

@blackbird: Our actual ped didn't seem to concerned, actually. But in the generic papers they give us it was basically like OMG NO BOTTLES ALL THEIR TEETH WITH ROT AND FALL OUT and they've worked really hard on the two and four teeth they have, so I'd hate for that to happen.

@Mrs Green Grass: We have a bunch of the take and toss cups, so I'll try those. They drink water out of them great, but they have a tendency to shake them to get the water out. But with formula I'll just watch them more closely. I've gotten into the bad habit of letting them graze/roam around with water or formula which I know isn't good! Before their nap I gave them formula in a sippy that has a really soft spout like a bottle, sort of? Anyway, they were basically like yeah no thanks. They nursed for a couple minutes then went down in their cribs just fine. Sometimes I think I force too much formula on them because I can't get it out of my head that they were small and need as many calories as possible. BUt yesterday Blake was in the 50th percentile! So obviously it's my hang up and not an actual problem at this point!

Before 18 months we stopped daytime bottles and put milk in sippy cups. In order for her to move to the next daycare class room she had not have bottles and she refused to drink milk out of sippy cup. At 18m check up Dr said not to force the sippy cup but to move away from the bottle, if she didnt want the milk try to add more dairy - cheese, yogurt, etc. At 19 months she moved into the next class room and they dont even do sippys. The kids get little milk cartons with straws and open cups for water - lo and behold she'll drink milk out of the carton. At 20m we're still working on morning bottle and bedtime bottle - some days she'll skip it, most days she demands it.

I was in the exact same place as you at one. My son is not on the growth chart and I was terrified he wouldn't drink enough if I switched. I ended up doing it anyway though and with a little trial and error, he kept about the same volume. (And 24 + nursing is A LOT more than he was ever drinking. I imagine cutting just a little bit will result in more food intake. It's hard to see the changes, but it does happen over time.) I went cold turkey and he didn't really protest. The first night, he didn't drink much, but by the third, he was drinking his normal amount.

The trick was to find a cup with a pretty quick spout, but not so quick that he chokes. All the ones with plastic stoppers were too hard for him to suck out of. The best fit for us were the Take and Toss sippys. We used them for about a year and then switched to straw cups.

Just a little addition, my friends who waited much past one had a VERY hard time with the transition because you start to get kids who know and can communicate what they want. So earlier is actually easier in most respects.

My LO had a ton of feeding issues in her first year, and wasn't into eating solids at ALL till after she was one year. On top of that, she was "behind" on her bottle skills, because she wouldn't drink a bottle awake until she was 11 months old. So she was still new to taking a bottle awake.

Because of her history, our doctor told us not to worry about a bottle-to-straw cup transition until her 15 months appointment. By her 15 month appointment, we were down to just a morning and night time bottle and on straw cups during the day and the Ped said we could cut out the other cold turkey.

Unfortunately....we were skeered, lol. My LO just doesn't like hemp milk out of non-bottle cups so she drinks maybe 4 oz during the day. We FINALLY dropped her morning bottle about 3 months ago, but we still have her night time bottle, at 22 months. haha. Totally embarrassing. But her night time sleep sucks, so we are afraid to mess with it.

@Mamasig: Yeah, I can't definitely see how that's true! At this point bottles are food and sippy cups are just fun. Maybe I'll try formula out of a sippy before their nap coming up since they usually take a bottle well then.

@twodoghouse: my doctor said something that made sense to me too. She said as long as we offer the bottle, he has no incentive to get better at the sippy (we try both straw and spout) and then it'll eventually become a power struggle. That's why we were trying the slow approach - bottle in the morning and at night and sippy during the day.

Even if they used bottles some of the day they would still be getting a lot of formula.

I'm trying this now. Let's see if it works.

@fancyfunction: Sounds good. We can't make the transition entirely to WCM until we see our GI, but that's about the amount they are taking of formula per day. I probably just need to take the leap and try it. I don't think they'd let themselves starve!

@fancyfunction: At that point, how many oz of milk was she on per day? Since my kids get so much of their calories from formula still, it makes me nervous to force the transition to another cup if it'll take a while to start using them well. (Right now they like playing with their sippy and straw cups, but don't sit down and drink from them seriously the way they do with bottles!)

With DS1, I quit cold turkey right at one. But he was good at the sippy cup. DS2 is not as good at it so we are going a bit slower. Yesterday he got milk from a sippy during the day and actually dis better than I thought he would.

As long as they can drink well out of a sippy cup, I would transition away from the bottle as soon as you can. It'll get harder as they get older. I don't think it matters either that it's formula or milk. Just as long as they can drink out of it. I also found DS1 was stubborn and didn't drink much for a couple of days. But once he realized the bottles were not coming back, he drank like normal.

We had my kids' 12 month well check yesterday. They've faced a lot of digestive issues with solids, but finally seem to be overcoming that. Yay! They definitely seem to be behind as far as intake of solids, though, and still take about 24 oz of formula a day plus nursing 4-5 times a day. Our regular ped wants to leave our plan for weaning off formula up to our GI who we see on June 1. However, in the generic "your baby at one" literature we were given, I've read that you should transition away from bottles because of issues with cavities. My kids use sippy cups for water and (sips of) cows milk, but they never drink enough from a cup for me to feel comfortable transitioning their bottles to a cup!

If your LO continued formula (or pumped breastmilk) past one, did you continue with a bottle? Or did you transition to doing formula out of a Sippy/straw cup?
