My son sat to start, then only wanted to stand as he got older.... One thing that helped to keep the pee IN the toilet and in the water was I just printed out little 'targets' that he puts in the water (they're just little 1/2 inch squares of paper with things he likes printed on them) and it keeps his attention and pee focused on the water in the bowl as he tries to sink the paper ;)

DS is basically potty-independent now (except for wiping), but when he was just starting, this is what we did...

* big potty at home/kid-sized potty at daycare = standing on ground or a stool, lean forward and touch the seat lid (or wall). No need to touch penis. (daycare taught him this, and it works great for him)

* training potty at home = sit and push penis down. mom and dad did this at the beginning, to help him learn how far to hold it down.

* big potty in public = stand on top of mom/dad's feet when he needs the extra height (like a stool). parent holds his torso, so he can lean forward without touching anything.

My son almost always pees a little when he poops - so we taught him to hold his penis down even if he thought he was only going poop. Now that he is older, he knows when he needs to hold it down or not. He never holds it while standing to pee, because of the way daycare taught him - we should probably teach him that eventually!!

@Mrs. Champagne: this one cracked me up! My son had one miss yesterday where he was like “it’s on my underwear! It’s in my shoes! It’s in my hair!” How on earth do you get it in your hair?! :silly:

Standing up absolutely helps. I think DS didn't need a step stool at that age, and in any case school should have small, kid-sized toilets. Also sometimes they really need to pay attention to where the stream is going and do some course correction

We trained our LO to stand. The sit and pee was way too messy. My mom said that you can train them by putting cheerios in the toilet for them to aim at.

DS is just over 3 and he usually stands on a step stool that we keep in the bathroom, but he can reach without it. DH also taught him how to point it down.
When we're out, I will lift him up if he can't reach.
He occasionally still overshoots but it's easy enough to clean and doesn't usually get his clothes.

@Ajsmommy: We did this! He has impeccable aim now.

DS stopped sitting pretty early in the game, but he knows when he does sit (pooping) that he has to point it down. I think standing has helped with the mess part because there are less steps so it is always less of an emergency.

ETA: He stands on our feet when we are out and about. We did have to teach him not to rest his penis on the toilet. Not sure why he thought that was casual to do.

We trained DS sitting then around 4 he decided on his own he would stand. I was kind of freaked about it being messy. Luckily it was coming up on summer and we let him pee outside lots to practice standing. Now at 5 it is split whether he sits or stands.

I just emphasize aiming down. I also remind him if he does get pee on the seat to wipe it up before flushing, but he isn't good at this.

My son stands. He’s literally never sat to pee at home.
He started the school year fairly newly trained and kept getting sent home in his spare pants and I thought it was so weird since he never has accidents at home. So I finally asked and they said it’s because he was peeing on himself when he sat to pee. So I explained that we don’t do that, he stands. That was in October, he hasn’t come home with spare clothes since.
So for us, standing was the way to go.
He rarely if ever pees on himself when he stands. He sometimes doesn’t pay attention and misses the bowl, but that’s not very often - a couple times a month? And I think that’s not as bad as wet clothes all the time. Pee just wipes off of the hard floor/wall/toilet so it’s nbd to me.

Right now my son is just not tall enough to stand so our potty method whether pee or poop is to sit him on the toilet backwards. For pee we tell him to make sure he aims his pee pee into the water. It’s easier to do that facing backwards. When he’s taller we will worry about standing but I don’t want pee everywhere right now.

My son stands. Usually he's good, a couple drops on the seat.

Sometimes there's an "emergency" as he calls it and "my wiener slipped out of my hand!!" And he literally soaks the bathroom 🤦🏼‍♀️ Not sure how that even happens! But standing seems to be the best method. Lol. Boys 😬

I feel silly asking but I need some pro tips!

My 3yo is pretty good about using the potty now (just recently started forcing the issue, he would be stay in diapers forever). But man it can be a mess. He usually gets there, but even pushing his penis down his aim seems awful, especially if there is a lot to go - water pressure straightens it out maybe? He ends up going a little in the bowl and a lot on his pants, shoes, floor, whatever. At home we can remove pants but need to figure it out for school etc (he just goes 2 days a week). Also the laundry, yikes.

Is standing up going to help or be just as bad in a different way? And how do they go standing up in a public bathroom or anywhere with a full size toilet and no step stool?

Training a girl was so much easier :silly: I keep telling my husband he has the equipment, he needs to teach him but that’s not working! Ha.
