@Mrs Panda: our dollar store has 2-packs of glow sticks with wand toppers -- my son didn't care whether he had the "sword" or "wand" topper - he just likes glow sticks..

@Anagram: that sounds cute, and I bet it was a hit! I'm still mulling and I like the idea of something edible - who can complain about candy? :)

@Mrs Panda: my girls had a ballet themed party and I had a similar problem with favors. While obviously, there are a lot of boys/men in ballet, all the favors I could find already made were all girls wearing tutus. And I didn't have the desire or time to make my own favors.

So in the end, I did an edible favor--pink cotton candy, individually packaged, with little labels that said "pink tulle candy" or something.

Thanks everyone, the alternative ideas are great, but I also feel better that it'll be fine (better, maybe) to give everyone the same thing!

At 3, my son would have been cool with whatever...he loved the gift bags that had stickers, play doh, and random stuff that had nothing to do with the theme of the party.

I agree with @hitchhiker: I don't want to teach my son that some things are for boys and other things are for girls. Some girls won't be interested in princesses, some boys will. Give them all the same thing.

To be honest, I would be upset if my daughter got different favors at a more"boy" themed party, and I hope I would be upset for my son of he got different favors at "girl" themed party. I don't think the kids think of these things as gendered and I think that's great.

My son also doesn't mind princess favors. He recently went to a Frozen party where he was the only boy guest and he got a few Olaf themed favors (an Olaf craft, Olaf candy and a build your own marshmallow Olaf).

you could go with something like a knight? Mike the Knight? boyish, but still in the same theme.

My boys would probably love it! They do seem to like all the bright pink girlie stuff. But how about foil balloons if you want something more neutral? You can get a variety including just plain colors inflated at the dollar store and I think all kids love them!

My son loved the princess favors at girls parties. A change of pace from the superhero parties.
Decorated cookies, gummies and candies are always loved too!

@MrsSRS: good ideas!

@Woolly Mammoth: I was kind of wondering if that would be the case - I know my girls are thrilled with super hero or ninja turtle or whatever "boy" things!

If you had a princess party for your 3-year old daughter and there would be boy guests, would you have more "boyish" party favors for the boys? At least as an option (for either the boys or girls)? If so, what would the more "boyish" option be?
