Great suggestions everyone! Sage, Kai, and Beckett are out because our friends all have children with those names.

@MrsKoala: Googling middle names specifically was a great idea! Any history really... we are both history teachers and have taught most eras. Our shared specialty is American History and my specialty is feminist history and the Renaissance/Reformation era.

DH and I are throwing around ideas for LO1's middle name, if this one turns out to be a boy.

The first name will be Granite, nickname Grant (to be used almost exclusively....). Our second son's name, if we ever have one, would be Slate Oxford. So it would be cool if it could go with that. Our last name has an "S" sound at the beginning.

DH has vetoed Asher, Mason, and Lincoln. We love the name Canyon but it can't be used with Granite.

Possible middle names include: Cedar, Emery, Harbor (???), Monroe, Pierce, Forrest (???), Summit.

Obviously we prefer names that refer to nature, gems, stones, trees, etc. Also historical names of significance are good.

Any other ideas or feedback?
