I don't think DH would be ok with a doll that looks like a baby, but he could surprise me. DS does have a bunch of dolls that he loves and I call his buddies, but they are characters animals so it doesn't bother DH. He always has one of his buddies everywhere we go.

I'd be pretty upset if my husband reacted that way (but I'm... flammable), but thankfully he and I agree on this one. Tools, dolls, cars, and kitchens for all!

haha, guess who buys the gifts and toys? Mama. Guess who does the majority of his playtime? Mama.

I've never thought to even ask my husband what he thinks about the baby doll, the play kitchen, or the shopping cart I've gotten for our son. If he ever gave me a hard time about it, I'd laugh at him and tell him to grow up. I don't think he would since these are the toys that he plays with at the gym daycare, it's really cute to see him in the play kitchen with the great big ex-football player daycare teacher.

Oh yeah, he's also getting a Black & Decker play tool set- to look just like Mama's tool set. Daddy isn't the handy one in our house.

I asked my husband if we could get DS a kitchen when he's older, and he said of course. He said he draws the line at dolls though.
I don't care much for the notion of gendered toys, so I don't care what DS wants to play with.

Yeah I would not be ok with that response but thankfully I don't think I'm going to have this problem with my wife. She also insists that they take dance regardless of gender.

I just suggested a play kitchen to my nannied kiddos mom and she polled her friends and everyone (moms and dads) said "of course! Anything that makes him happy!" and these are conservative people from Louisiana.

@swurlygurl: haha love that comic. I think there's truth in it - kids are practicing life skills while they play so why wouldn't we want everyone to practice everything!

It really bugs me that it's more acceptable for girls to play with things that are considered boyish but not vice versa. Fortunately my husband is on board with this notion, but I'd be really frustrated if he wasn't!

@MamaMoose: Yea, I brought that up in the discussion too. That if we had a future daughter, those toys would be around, and would he stop E from playing with them then? He said no, but it would be ok, because they weren't specifically "HIS" toys. Mkay, dear... whatever you say.

My husband buys our daughter all sorts of "boy" toys (sports gear, cars, etc).

@kiddosc: I think my husband would be more resistant to buying a son traditionally stereotypical "girl" toys. But the good news is that since we already have a daughter that stuff is already in our house, so any future sons we may have will have the opportunity play with it without me buying it specifically for them.

@mrskc: my parents got our son a kitchen for Christmas last year and when I had asked for it my dad said, "a kitchen?!? But he's a boy!!" I responded, "um...you're a boy and YOU cook."

I think it's vastly different (and inherently easier) for dads to accept that their girls play with trucks than for their boys to play with dolls.

@kiddosc: my son looooves his stuffies and he carries them around everywhere and gives them hugs, kisses and high fives.

I think DH would be the same way. I'm glad I had a daughter first, so we will already have a dollhouse, kitchen, baby dolls etc that any future son can play with if he wants to.

Reminds me of this comic.

My husband is pretty great about this, but I know my dad was resistant to getting my nephew a play kitchen when he was little. My mom did it anyway, and it turned out to be one of his favorite toys. My dad occasionally makes remarks about my DS playing with "girl" toys, but I just remind him there's no such thing as gendered toys in our house. :) Some of DS's favorite things are the play kitchen and dress up box!

A play kitchen is cool- some of the best chefs in the world are men! We only have a daughter, and another girl on the way, but we strive to let her pick toys she's interested in, whether it's dolls or trucks.

Can you just buy him a boy looking doll and maybe your DH will come around? I like this Manhattan toys doll.

My husband wants DD to be athletic and into sports (my idea of athletic is watching football and wearing my team's colors, while he's played competitive sports his whole life). However, he gravitates towards incredibly girly clothing and toys, while I'm far more gender neutral. I'm unsure how he'd be with a son, in this regard.

Yes! Every time I suggest a toy that I think is gender neutral, my husband is quick to say no and suggest I buy trucks and trains. He is also pretty progressive but at the same time, he grew up on a farm with 3 brothers...so some of his gender stereotypes are engrained in him.

What I usually end up doing is I buy the stuff anyway and let my husband warm up to it... He usually knows I'm right anyway!
