The majority of my son's gymnastic class are boys! It's a great activity to work on coordination, balance, following instruction, etc. not to mention an awesome energy burner! It's hardly just a girl's sport!

My nephew is 5-1/2 and has been in gymnastics for a few years. He loves it and I've never heard anyone in the family make any comments. I think he is going to have such an advantage no matter what sports he decides to play!

@artsyfartsy: My son is almost 4 and in gymnastics. He will be in it as long as I can keep him in it and I would even train him up to compete if he wants to. I did gymnastics and coach it. I personally am more invested in our mens international program than the womens program right now. The men aren't dominant but they are good. Right now his class is him and one other little boy. Another boy is supposed to be starting. I love boys classes personally.

@Mrs. Tiger: Did K like it?

@lilteacherbee: Haha that's awesome.

@yoursilverlining: @avivoca: I'm actually wanting to put T in martial arts when he turns 4! That was my thought about it. If anything gymnastics would build a strong foundation for martial arts or other future sports.

@jhd: I can't believe how much he loves it! His teacher actually taught my sisters and I when we were little. She approached me after she heard about his delay and I thought we'd at least just try it. I didn't expect him to take off with it! He can't do everything the older toddlers can because they can walk and are older obviously, but he can actually do most things either full out or modified for his age. He's only 13 months.

@hotchildinthecity: That's awesome! Gymnastics is something that has no age restriction...so if anything he can do it from now until whenever he can enroll in other sports and it'll be beneficial for any physical activity he does later on.

@mrscobee: Aww! I hope you do!

My nephew did it when he was 4-ish (he's 5 now). He really enjoyed it and picked it up fast. His parents let him choose a different sport/activity each season so now he is doing basketball. I think he might do gymnastics again soon, but he likes trying everything.

There were probably 1/3 boys in the class. My family is very religious and very into traditional gender roles, but no one said anything and seemed happy to hear about it. I'm not sure how they would react if he got really into as he got older.

It wouldn't faze me, but I bet my inlaws/T's family would have some remarks about it if we put our hypothetical son in gymnastics. I think it's pretty cool, honestly. It could definitely help him if he transitions into other sports or even karate (T could do the full splits both ways when he was in karate).

My co-worker's son was (is?) in gymnastics and it helped him a ton for karate - the coordination, etc gave him a big leg up when he started karate. That might be a way to make it less "questionable" (ugh) for some less 21st-century-thinking people!

I'm totally thinking about putting my LO in gymnastics! I think it's great for boys and I feel the same way about dance (and I would totally get the side-eye around here too... :bummed: )

Whatever. A guy I graduated high school with did gymnastics/dance since he was tiny and now he's dancing on Broadway and dated someone from Dancing With The Stars. Way more successful than the people who criticized him years ago ha.

Does your boy do gymnastics or know someone's who does? How is it received by family and friends?

We put T in a baby gymnastics class to help with his motor skills and he's really taken off with it. One little girl who is now 4 came by class the other night and was showing everyone the advanced moves (a LOT!!) she could do because she had been in the baby gym class before she could walk (like T).

He really enjoys it and since he's started so early, he has a major head start on learning. He already knows the cues to do a somersault and a handstand (with help obviously lol). Last night he cried the whole way there and then perked up into smiles when we walked into the gym. I want to keep him in it as long as he wants to, past the baby class, but my family kind of side eye me when I mention it. Since its mostly viewed as a "girls sport" (really dumb).

That doesn't sway me but I'm interested in others experience with boys in gymnastics.

ETA: We live in a very rural area where everyone is still bass ackwards about some things. The common thought around here is gymnastics = cheerleading which is very much just for girls. :/
