I also have an irritable uterus, as a PP said, and those definitely sound like contractions. They started at 18 weeks in this (my 2nd) pregnancy. I had them frequently/regularly enough to go on bed rest for 7 weeks during my 1st pregnancy. It's worth calling your doctor about, and generally paying attention to. But it can be fairly normal, or at least not something to worry about too much.

Your dr will most likely recommend you drink more water since dehydration can cause them, and that's what they always tell me. But, I've noticed a full bladder causes more frequent and more intense contractions for me than dehydration. So I drink lots of water, and aim for a bathroom run every hour to keep my bladder fairly empty. Those are the only thing I've found that keep my contractions to a manageable level. I still have them, but they aren't as bad.

@MMcAlli: BH is the most likely culprit. I did not have them with DD1 but have been having them with this one since about 18w.

I mention them at each appointment...so far the advice I have been given is more than 4 in an hour or regular for more than a day to call.

At my last appointment I informed them I was probably having 5-10 of them a day and they decided to check me (30.5w) just to make sure they were not productive contractions. Sure enough I was nice and sealed up.

Cant ever hurt to call if you want but I would def mention them at the next appointment!

It sounds like BH, but I'd check in with your doctor to be sure. I had them pretty early with my first, but I don't ever remember any back pain with them. That would worry me a bit. If you drink water and lay down with your feet elevated and they go away, you should be okay!

Definitely sounds like BH contractions! Up your water intake if you get them again with any regularity; changing position can help, too. More than six in an hour and you should call your OB!

Yes it sounds like it could be Braxton Hicks! Drinking water really helps with that.

Sounds like Braxton Hicks for sure. It could mean that you're overdoing it though. Try to drink more water in general and sit down and take it easy when you notice them

@MMcAlli: I started getting BH around that time too. They came more frequently if I wasn't hydrated. Sounds normal.

They're supposed to start a bit later, but with my second I got Braxton Hicks at nine weeks. It happened when I did too much walking, mostly. It was scary and I had to take it easy with exercise for the entire first trimester. Call your doctor just to be safe, that's what they're there for!

Yes that sounds like Braxton Hicks. I had them starting at 17 weeks with my first and 9 weeks with my second. I have a somewhat "irritable" uterus and get them throughout pregnancy. They get stronger and more annoying the further along you get. :(

Hi Ladies,

So last night I was experiencing something new, which I will add everything is new since this is my first pregnancy, anyways I was feeling "off" my back was hurting & I noticed my stomach was harder than normal when I was experiencing the back ache/pain, then it would stop for a little while & then come back. I wasn't experiencing pain, it was just weird tightness feeling kind of like a very mild period cramp plus some back ache/pain. I at first thought maybe the baby was moving around but it just kept doing it for a period of time. I finally decided to take a hot shower & it finally let up. Plus I added a heating pad to my back. After doing some googling a lot of people said this was "Braxton hicks". Since this is my first I have no idea if that is true or not. What my question is, did any of you have Braxton hicks early on? I am 18 weeks & I thought any form of contractions waited till later on? Should I be worried & call my doctor? Or is this normal?

ETA: When the tightness happens I am pretty sure I can actually see where the baby is. It kind of looks like a small ball under my skin.

A big thanks in advance!
