Very very fast labor - no break between contractions. I mean I was in screaming pain the whole time but it got even worse during the peak of contractions. It was awful all the time, though. I got Cervidil at 10pm which was enough to put me into labor - nothing happening till about 1am when I started having contractions - water broke 2:30 am on its own- baby born 3:30 am. That hour between 2:30-3:30am when the baby was born is probably the worst hour of my life. So so so painful.

I got an epidural 5 minutes before delivery because they didn't think I was very far along, but I felt everything. Not enough time for it to work. I was numb for getting stitches though!

@DesertDreams88: @Foodnerd81: @KT326: Thanks for all of the stories! Definitely reassuring.

When I got to the hospital they said I was 0cm and that my water didn’t break. Well I knew it had and I was in absolute hell so it was crushing to hear I’d be sent home. The Dr came in an hour later and I was at 4cm. So clearly something was happening :silly: That’s when they got me the epidural. A couple hours later she came to check and I was already at 10cm. So the labor itself went super quick. I must’ve been in what many women call transition that whole time. That would make sense and I’m glad I’m not the only one! Mamybe Baby #2 will be slightly less dramatic (but just as quick!!).

I had pretty constant contractions with my third child, my waters had broken at 0300 on the Friday morning but contractions didn’t start till the very early hours of Saturday morning and once they got going they were hard and fast. My active labour was somewhere between three and five hours and I hadn’t dilated at all prior to going into labour so I went the full 10cm (my cervix was closed and high on the Friday afternoon).

@annem1990: I have wondered about this, too, and wondered if it was DS’s position (sunny side up, as we later learned) and/or some anatomical anomolies of my own in combination with his position. TL;DR version is that I was induced for being almost 42 weeks. Two days later (days!), no epi, I was only at 7 cm. Had my water broken, pitocin up full blast and that’s when it really hurt non-stop. Finally got an epi but it only changed the excruciating pain, it didn’t stop or dull it. I stalled out there for 5 hours and didn’t progress beyond 7 cm. Failed induction; had a cs. The intense non-stop pain continued until I was in the OR and they numbed me out for the cs. Unbelievable. I have scoliosis and it creates SI and other back issues, not to mention failed epis, so I have a feeling it had a part to play.

Sorry but I had the same experience. From what I read, water breaking amps things up. LO1 was terrible with like 6-8 hours of transition. During and afterward, I had the same feeling as you.... that was NOT what they said labor would be like!

I don’t think it’s uncommon for transition, but sounds like it went on a long time for you. The good news is that you body is usually much more efficient for a second labor and you’d probably blow through that part. With my second, transition was insane but short. With all of them I went back to having a break once I started pushing - it’s common for contractions to space back out then.

I had breaks between for both. That sounds like a super intense first labor.

For both babies my water didn’t break until well into labor though- it got way more intense after water broke (naturally). Even with my much faster second birth, I had some break in between, even at the end when I was pushing. I had no epidural either time- but I’m pretty certain I would have with a labor like you described.

With my first I didn’t get a break at all once my water broke. They were on top of each other immediately. Even with my epidural the nurse commented that they were still on top of each other.

With my second, I had breaks between and it was great. It ended up being a much faster labor too!

LO is 14 months and we are thinking of starting to try for #2. I know I'm getting ahead of myself, but this has always confused me about DS's birth and wanted to know what others experience.

My water broke at 5am (no contractions prior) and the pain immediately started. I could time them 2-3minutes apart. They were super painful and would scream through them. But then I'd have a minute or so break in between. During those times I was able to eat, pack, laugh at a TV show etc. It was super painful during the contraction, but there was a clear break.

By the time we got to the hospital at 6:30am, there were absolutely no breaks. I could sort of tell when one was "peaking," but the pain was constant. I literally screamed non-stop like a crazy person. It was not what I had been told about labor. Where was my 30-second break?!?

I planned on getting an epidural from before labor started and by 9:30am I was pain-free. Then I went back to my happy self and was even online shopping while the Dr checked me to say I was at 10cm. But it's always bugged me...was what I experienced for those few hours like most? I really was under the impression you got a short break between contractions even while pushing...
