@Mrs. Sunshine: ugh, sounds frustrating. It's just funny to me that he's obviously done some sort of research to come to the conclusion that grains and dairy are his issue, but all of those articles would have also mentioned more vegetables and whole foods. Gotta love that selective reading :silly:

It seems possible that his digestion issues could stem from too much processed foods and no vegetables, no? Eating some fresh food seems easier than cutting grains and dairy.

@Mrs. Sunshine: well, maybe a gentle suggestion that he can research online and make you a list of groceries or meal ideas. My husband does well with two options, as in, "Well, honey, you can eat my food ideas or you can do the research and figure out what you want. Which will help you best?"

@Meow: he leaves all his veggies on his plate at dinner. I don't even send veggies when I send leftovers for work. He has an extreme preference for processed foods (his mom never cooked, so it makes sense). My two year old eats more veggies than he does. Anytime I try to talk to him about eating more fruits and veggies he rolls his eyes (coincidentally, nutrition is a passion of mine). He wants to make this change because of a digestion issue he's struggling with. Hes hoping it will help but he hasn't planned or put any further thought in to it

He doesn't really eat eggs at all! I told him he needs to decide and he says he doesn't know what there is. I agree that he needs to make the swap only if he adding more nutritious foods in their place. I guess he's on his own this week. That feels so bizarre to me but I'm not sure how to help him!

@Mrs. Sunshine: my husband started a similar diet a year ago, but he knew exactly what he wanted to eat. I don't understand why he's leaving it up to you to figure it out?

Mine eats two fried eggs with a couple strips of bacon. Of course there are substitutes for bacon, if he's trying to avoid that type of food. He adds leftover veggies sometimes.

@Mrs. Sunshine: I agree with everyone else - if he's a picky eater and wants to change his eating habits, HE needs to figure out what he's going to eat for breakfast.

We eat a lot of Aidell's Chicken Apple Sausage with fruit or eggs for breakfast. Its Whole 30 compliant) - http://www.aidells.com/products

@Mrs. Sunshine: One thing we really used to like was making a hash of shredded veggies (like coleslaw mix or broccoli slaw), a scoop of sauerkraut, and ground beef with chopped bacon. You stir in a little Dijon or grainy mustard and salt and pepper for seasoning and top with fried eggs. It was super filling and we would eat it for dinner, but it could be breakfast. Skip the eggs if needed.

@Mrs. Sunshine: That is tough. I think I'd try to bring him our ideas/suggestions and get his input. If he's going to make a dramatic lifestyle change, he needs to be willing to help with solutions. It's tough, but you can do it together! We struggled with eating dairy/egg free when we first started. I added back in dairy slowly because I tolerate it really well. (NEED yogurt, actually).

One question I might ask him is what he envisions eating. Because it's all good and well to cut out dairy and grains, but if you're not going to replace with whole, nutritious food - it isn't valuable. He needs to replace with lean protein, vegetables, fruits, etc.

Can you roast a bunch of broccoli florets and sauté some greens like chard and kale with bacon in batches? And then reheat in the morning with fried eggs on top? It's not scrambled eggs. Or do a big baked crustless quiche with the greens and then nutritional yeast mixed in for cheesy flavor. Or just let him eat his preferred fruit, Google recipes for nut granola to have with almond milk, and hard boiled eggs. Or make batches of almond flour muffins.

I eat primarily paleo, so no grains or dairy (although I'm much more lax now that I'm pregnant).

Here's my thoughts.

If he doesn't really like eggs, breakfast is going to be HARD. We eat eggs every single day.

You could try eggs in things though. This has boiled eggs in it but it's great and easy to prep ahead. My husband loves it! http://fedandfit.com/2014/01/28/the-breakfast-salad-2/

Also, paleo pancakes. Easy and delish. There are a million variations, but here's one. http://civilizedcavemancooking.com/recipes/breakfast/perfect-paleo-pancakes/

Would he eat non traditional breakfast food for breakfast? Like, could you try to serve leftovers. A lot of paleo bloggers who eat egg free do this.

Sweet potato hashes are also good! I usually make one with chopped sauteed bacon, shredded sweet potato, and top with a poached or fried egg and avocado. But you could do without egg. Sweet potatoes are just a great thing anyway.

White potatoes are good for breakfast too.

If he's that picky, I'd ask him to get some things for himself that he'll like.

DH and I buy some food for ourselves that we prefer (we don't eat breakfast or lunch together, just dinner). Occasionally we'll pick up things for each other, too, but that way neither person can complain.

DH says he wants to cut back on grains, dairy and junk. Which is fine. I loosely follow a paleo-type diet so I know how make dinners and such that will do the job. But my DH is extremely picky. Extremely. His fruits he likes are apples and canned pears and peaches. He likes broccoli. He says scrambled eggs make him sick. Cereal is obviously out. It's up long before the rest of us so the noise factor of a smoothie wouldn't work, plus I don't know if he'd actually drink one. I planned on going grocery shopping in like 4 hours and I don't know what to feed him. Everything I love he turns his nose up at. Please help!
